Job Description
THE INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
The two-summer SALES APPLICATIONS ENGINEER INTERNSHIP program is for current sophomores going into their junior year next fall. The program is part of a larger 3-5 year sales development program to prepare you for a FIELD SALES ROLE within 3-5 years after graduation based on the student’s performance and ITW Welding’s current business needs.
The internship will be a minimum of 10 weeks long each summer rotation. You will gain hands-on exposure through working with the Applications and Welding Engineering teams, Technical Sales, and Customer Service to analyze customers’ needs and sales information to design or re-design, develop, test and implement product solutions for key end user customers.
You will have a UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY to understand and learn welding applications as it applies to all industries across North America. This internship will require approximately 30% travel to support current and new customers. The 2-summer rotation will include 2 of the 3 locations: TROY, OHIO (Hobart Filler Metal); APPLETON, WISCONSIN (Miller Industrial Equipment); HOUSTON, TX (Full ITW Welding Portfolio). Relocation assistance will be provided. Locations to be determined.
SUMMER EXPERIENCES
TECHNICAL SALES – IN THE FIELD
Shadow with Technical Sales Team to meet and interact with end customers in both factory and field locations to understand the customer pain points and how we can provide customer back innovative solutions through technical applications expertise and demonstration of equipment and processes
Exposure to welding cost analysis and return on investment calculations utilizing internal tools and sales processes
Participate/Support an event with the Miller Roadshow or another tradeshow event
Complete a key project and present to the leadership team that involves one of the following: a customer specific project/request, competitive analysis, new product development or modification of existing products

WELDING ENGINEERING/APPLICATIONS – IN THE DIVISION
Work with the Applications & Welding Engineering team to gain hands-on experience and expertise in tubular, stick electrodes, solid wire, aluminum filler metals; as well as industrial welding equipment and accessories.
Perform and create key product data to support customer needs
Perform and create reports on product evaluations and customer projects
Field calls with Applications Engineering Hotline and job shadow with the customer service team
Qualifications
THE SKILLS NEEDED
Because you will interface with engineering, operations, quality, technical sales, customer service departments, and end users, you must possess strong communication skills, be able to work with a team mindset across departments, and demonstrate the ability to problem-solve with and influence others.
IDEALLY, YOU MUST HAVE THE DESIRE TO PURSUE CUSTOMER-FACING ROLE AFTER GRADUATION SUCH AS TECHNICAL SALES, APPLICATIONS ENGINEERING, PRODUCT MANAGEMENT, ETC.
Pursuing a WELDING ENGINEERING degree and hands-on experience with welding processes (in or outside the classroom)
Successfully completed sophomore year of their college program
Strong knowledge in welding application and processes
Ability to be proactive in recognizing improvement opportunities are necessary
Ability to multitask within a dynamic work environment while managing your own time and prioritizing critical tasks and projects
Collaborative nature to work across multiple functions, teams, and divisions
Strong communication and presentation skills including expertise in Microsoft Office, along with strong written and verbal interpersonal skills
