    Program Overview

    The DoD SkillBridge Airframe & Powerplant Technician Program provides transitioning service members the opportunity to gain hands-on civilian aviation maintenance experience while still on active duty. Participants work alongside certified A&P technicians and maintenance leaders, developing practical skills in aircraft inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and return-to-service processes across corporate, commercial, or regional aircraft fleets.

    This internship is designed to support the transition from military aviation maintenance to FAA-regulated civilian operations, offering valuable exposure to Part 135 and/or Part 145 environments.

    Key Responsibilities

    Aircraft Maintenance & Repair

    • Assist with routine and non-routine maintenance tasks under supervision of certified A&P technicians.

    • Support inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, component replacements, and system servicing.

    • Learn proper use of tooling, ground support equipment, and maintenance documentation.

    Technical & Regulatory Training

    • Gain familiarity with FAA Part 65, Part 43, Part 135, or Part 145 maintenance practices.

    • Learn to interpret AMMs, IPCs, wiring diagrams, and engineering instructions.

    • Participate in on-the-job training focused on airframe, powerplant, and avionics fundamentals.

    Shop & Hangar Support

    • Assist in maintaining clean, safe, FOD-free work areas.

    • Support component removal/installation, aircraft jacking, towing, and servicing activities.

    • Help technicians prepare aircraft for inspections, heavy checks, or modification programs.

    Documentation & Compliance

    • Practice proper logging of maintenance tasks under supervision.

    • Learn civilian maintenance recordkeeping standards, including work orders, task cards, and corrective actions.

    • Follow OSHA and company safety protocols at all times.

    Qualifications

    • Active-duty U.S. military service member approved for DoD SkillBridge participation.

    • Aviation maintenance background (aircraft structures, propulsion, avionics, crew chief, etc.).

    • Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with aircraft systems.

    • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and maintenance instructions.

    • Excellent work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn civilian maintenance practices.

    Preferred (Not Required)

    • Completed or in-progress FAA A&P coursework.

    • Military aviation MOS/AFSC background (Crew Chief, Aviation Structural Mechanic, Powerplant, Avionics, etc.).

    • Experience on military or fixed-wing aircraft platforms.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to lift 50 lbs, stand for long periods, and work in hangars or on flight lines.

    • Ability to bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined aircraft spaces.

    Work Environment

    • Fast-paced aircraft maintenance facility (corporate, commercial, or regional).

    • Must be willing to work various shifts based on operational needs.

    • Hands-on training environment with daily technician mentorship.

    Post-Program Opportunities

    Participants who successfully complete the SkillBridge program may be considered for:

    • Full-time A&P Mechanic roles (for licensed technicians)

    • Apprentice / Junior Technician roles (for those finishing A&P school)

    • Specialty paths: Structures, Avionics, Interior, AOG, Planners, Inspectors, etc.
