The SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) Coordinator and Advisor position reports to the Director of Regulatory Compliance/Principal Designated School Official.
The SEVIS Coordinator and Advisor advises F-1 international students on immigration status and regulations; cultural adjustment and academic culture; financial issues; orienting to life in the U.S. The position serves as Designated School Official (DSO) and processes student requests for immigration benefits. The position works with the PDSO and the Registrar for the university's reporting and compliance with U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Department of State (DOS) requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Works with the PDSO to manage international student records in SEVIS and ensure that student enrollment status and all reportable events are reported in SEVIS by mandated deadlines. Reportable events include students' initial reporting to the university upon arrival; changes of address; changes of program and field of study; enrollment status; changes of employment status; and violations of status. Works with the university registrar and academic advisor to ensure the timely updating of information on the Student Information System(SIS) and SEVIS.
Generate and analyze various student reports from SIS and SEVIS.
Review, process, and approve modules of student information through the internal database (Prepare).
Advises non-immigrant students on immigration regulations, including maintenance of legal status, employment authorization, international travel, extensions of stay, and changes of status, etc.
Evaluates complex situations involving multiple stakeholders (student, university, government agencies) and advises on courses of action.
Functions as a legal signatory of immigration documents (I-20s) for F international students granting or recommending benefits such as employment authorization and reduced course load.
Acts as a liaison with university departments and government agencies to resolve complex immigration-related issues.
Advises international students on personal, academic, financial, and cultural issues to support academic and personal success.
Uses cross-cultural communication skills to work effectively with non-immigrant students, faculty, and staff and to communicate complex matters.
Provides education, support, and guidance about and on behalf of international students to MU faculty and staff and the larger university community.
