Mini Pony Caregiver Job Description
Position Summary: The Mini Pony Caregiver positon at Always and Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary is responsible for ensuring the daily care, safety, and overall well-being of our rescued mini ponies. This hands-on role includes feeding, grooming, health monitoring, and providing physical and mental enrichment to support each pony’s happiness and livloehood. Caregivers will also maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment in all animal care areas. The ideal candidate is compassionate, dependable, and experienced in equine care, with a strong understanding of the unique needs of mini breeds requiring specialized attention.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide daily feedings, fresh water, and medications as directed.
Perform grooming, bonding, and enrichment activities with mini ponies.
Observe and document animal behavior and health conditions.
Clean and maintain stalls, pastures, and barn facilities.
Assist with veterinary visits and farrier appointments.
Monitor for signs of illness or injury and report concerns promptly.
Safely handle and lead ponies for care or transport as needed.
Maintain accurate records of feeding, treatments, and health updates.
Support rescue efforts, intakes, and individualized care plans.
Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and veterinarians.
Qualifications:
Previous experience with horses or equine care
Ability to handle animals with calm, confident care—even those that are shy, nervous, or have special needs.
Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs, walking on uneven ground, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow care instructions precisely.
Reliable, compassionate, and committed to animal welfare.
Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
Comfortable with a heavy social media presence, and using Facebook messenger.
Preferred Attributes:
Experience in a rescue or sanctuary environment.
Basic knowledge of equine medical care and hoof maintenance.
Ability to assist with emergency care or animal transport when needed.
Working Conditions:
This role involves outdoor work in varying weather, exposure to dust, hay, and animal allergens, and close contact with animals of varying temperaments. The caregiver must be prepared for physically demanding tasks and emotionally rewarding experiences as part of a mission-driven organization committed to lifelong animal care.
