    REPORTS TO: Director of Research

    Minimum salary is $54,205 (Salary will be set commensurate with experience)

    This position will be onsite in the Minnesota Senate Building and Capitol. Telework options will be available.

    THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT MINNESOTA SENATE EMPLOYEES ONLY.

    Position Summary

    The Researcher serves as a resource for Senators and staff on designated issues within a partisan political caucus. Responsibilities include building and maintaining expertise on issues, tracking, and analyzing issues and legislation, assisting Senators with queries and constituent concerns, and collaborating on group research projects.

    During Legislative Session this position will be expected to work longer hours with the ability to earn additional paid time off.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Provide research expertise, support, and communication to Senators, staff, and lobbyists in the areas of State Government and Higher Education.
    • Build and maintain knowledge about issues within assigned committee jurisdictions from news sources and other publications.
    • Serve as a policy expert to Senators and staff during the legislative session.
    • Monitor assigned issues for Senators, staff, and research team members.
    • Prepare and write bill committee briefs using multiple sources for Senators and staff to use as a resource during and after the legislative session.
    • Provide preparation to members on committee issues, including questions and talking points for use in committee hearings.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Public or Business Administration, Social Science, Writing, Communications, Marketing, or related area of study.

    OR

    Two (2) years of experience in policy advocacy, public policy, public administration, marketing communications, research, or related.

    In addition to the qualifications listed above, applicants must demonstrate:

    • Strong written and oral communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
    • Ability to perform work with minimal supervision.
    • Knowledge and understanding of the legislative process.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Prior experience working with the legislature, executive branch, or government affairs.
    • Ability to explain legislation, policies, and issues to the public, news media, and other interested parties.
    • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with legislators, legislative staff, executive branch personnel, media personnel, lobbyists, and the public.
