    Salary: For an entry-level Legislative Assistant, the annual salary will range from $40,842 - $55,103 (As of 7/1/23 this minimum will increase to $46,271) . Actual starting salary will depend on professional work experience, qualifications, and related legislative/government experience.

    Telework: This position works on-site in the Minnesota Senate Building and Capitol during the legislative session.

    Days of Work/Hours: Monday-Friday/8am-4:30pm during the interim, this position is eligible for hybrid opportunities.

    Appointment Type: Full-time/Permanent

    Position Summary

    The Legislative Assistant provides administrative support for a DFL Senator's office. Legislative Assistants are responsible for the scheduling, constituent services, bill tracking, and more for their Senator.

    The LA position requires excellent written and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail. The position involves frequent public contact and regular communication with committee members, constituents, stakeholders, and legislative staff. Strong customer service and good communication skills required, as well as the ability to be self-directed and remain focused to achieve short- and long-term work goals.

    Understanding of state government and the legislative process helpful, but not required. Must have the ability to work long and irregular hours, especially during session.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Degree in Political Science, Communications, Public Administration, Social Science, Public Policy, Business Administration, or related area of study.

    OR

    One (1) year of experience in state government, policy advocacy, community organization, customer service, administrative support, legislative session in any capacity, service in the Military, or related.

    In addition to the qualifications listed above, applicants must demonstrate:

    • Ability to manage time, operate efficiently, meet deadlines, maintain multiple projects simultaneously, and deal with frequent interruptions.
    • Ability to handle sensitive information with tact and diplomacy and maintain confidentiality.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills sufficient to engage with and respond to constituent inquiries, media requests, comprehensive reports and newsletters, and more.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel), Google Calendar, Zoom, and other virtual meeting programs.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge and understanding of the legislative process.
    • Experience managing and creating content on social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.

    Competencies

    • Ability to actively listen, project a calm demeanor, and discern needs when speaking with constituents.

    • Ability to be self-directed and managed work independently as well as in a team environment.
