    SALARY: For an entry-level Legislative Assistant, the annual salary will range from $40,842 - $55,103. Actual starting salary will depend on professional work experience, qualifications, and related legislative/government experience.

    TELEWORK: This position works on-site in the Minnesota Senate Building and Capitol during the legislative session. When the legislature is not in session, flexible hybrid options may be available.

    DAYS OF WORK/HOURS: Monday-Friday/8am-5pm. This position requires long and irregular hours and the ability to meet tight deadlines during the legislative session, including evening and weekend work. Additional paid time off will be available.

    APPOINTMENT TYPE: Full-time/Permanent

    STATUS: Unclassified/At-will

    REPORTS TO: Legislative Support Supervisor

    Position Summary

    The Legislative Assistant will assist in daily operations by providing individualized technical and administrative support to an assigned Senator with scheduling, written and oral communication (to constituents, legislators, staff, media, governmental agencies, and lobbyists), constituent casework, legislative tracking, and general support.

    We seek someone who is highly motivated and passionate about government while being committed to providing the best possible service, representation, and leadership to a Senator's constituents. An ideal candidate will be organized and capable of managing multiple work streams. This is a fast-paced work environment that requires adaptability and flexibility.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Degree in Political Science, Communications, Public Administration, Social Science, Public Policy, or related area of study.

    OR

    One (1) year of experience in state government, policy advocacy, written communication, legislative session in any capacity, office assistance, or related.

    In addition to the qualifications listed above, applicants must demonstrate:

    • Exceptional organizational and administrative skills to sufficiently manage a Senator's district with a high volume of constituent casework and full committee schedules.
    • Ability to handle sensitive information with tact and diplomacy and maintain confidentiality.
    • Strong communication skills, both interpersonal and written.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel), Google Calendar, Zoom, and other virtual meeting programs.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge and understanding of the legislative process.

    Competencies

    • Ability to actively listen, project a calm demeanor, and discern needs when speaking with constituents.
    • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
