Modern Dog and Modern Cat magazines are looking for a highly creative, organized Graphic Designer with 3-5 years of experience in the fast-paced world of editorial design. The candidate must possess exceptional skills in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) and have an exceptional eye for typography and color-correction—if you don’t know how to work with character/paragraph styles, fine-tune letterspacing and leading, and mask images in Photoshop, this is not the job for you. Candidates must also have an intuitive understanding of content marketing and branding with a keen ability to bring new concepts forward in collaboration with other stakeholders. The dog-friendly Modern Dog and Modern Cat office is located in Kitsilano, Vancouver; local candidates only, please. Responsibilities: • Contribute visual ideas for and design all editorial pages for each print issue of Modern Dog and Modern Cat magazine. • Create digital editions and ebooks • Working closely with the editorial team, paginate all editorial pages and advertising (both display ads and added-value opportunities) into each print issue according to an editorial lineup and advertising spreadsheet. • Design collateral for the sales, marketing and circulation departments. This includes business reply cards, subscription campaigns, trade show materials, and sell sheets. • Export, upload, and approve final files for press following specific printer requirements. • Receive and process (as well as occasionally design) all ads from advertising clients and internal sales staff, liaising with individuals as necessary, and ensuring everything is to spec • Conceptualize editorial story ideas—advising what content will look best and be interesting to readers—with internal staff. • Monitor online performance of Modern Dog/Cat digital assets (stories/sites) in order to inform future content/design direction • Ensure that Modern Dog and Modern Cat’s brand style and voice are maintained in all visual communication. • Maintain and create consistent, on-brand design templates in Adobe InDesign using master pages. • Work closely with marketing and circulation department to translate Modern Dog’s and Modern Cat’s marketing objectives and brand strategies into on-brand creative execution, creating marketing materials and ad campaigns • Adapt print content for the web and post/update web stories, images and contests • Oversee all web content and troubleshoot contests and user issues for both www.moderndogmagazine.com and www.moderncat.com. Qualifications: • Organizational wizard—You manage filenames and digital storage with accurate efficiency, anticipate deadlines and problems before they occur, and laugh in the face of deadlines (you got this!). • Colour correction—You can take someone’s quick snapshot and make it look studio-perfect. • Art direction—You live for grids, hierarchy, and image-sourcing challenges. You know that a great story needs artistic development early in the production process to make it shine. • Layout—You design both editorial and advertising content with ease, no matter how complex it is. • Typography—You know all the “in” fonts and own a copy of Robert Bringhurst’s The Elements of Typographic Style (and aren’t afraid to use it). • Technical—You never let a low-resolution image go to press and know how to mind your measurements, bleed, crop marks, and colour spaces. • Very strong English language skills—You can spot grammar mistakes and brainstorm effective cover lines and headlines. • Collaboration—You are a creative, out-of-the-box thinker who plays well with others. When you see a content opportunity you aren’t afraid to suggest it and develop it. • Production workflow—You manage expectations and oversee systems to keep things ticking along as fast as possible. When something isn’t efficient, you fix it. • Ability to work well under pressure and within tight deadlines (fast and exacting). • Proficient in web technologies (HTML5, CSS). Experience working with Drupal and WordPress an asset. • Familiarity with current SEO practices, Google Analytics, and digital data analysis an asset. Compensation: $45,000
