THE BIG PICTURE

The Merchandiser Monger reports to the General Manager(s), and is responsible for maintaining a watchful eye on all things in the mini mart, including overseeing all operation of the merch department, monitoring and organizing inventory also by performing daily cleaning, organizing, stocking and selling of retail items, coffee products and drinks, and draft beer. As one of the important and often first faces of our company for many of our fans, so it is his/her job to represent Modern Times & our products in the best, most informative way possible while providing an outstanding service experience for every person who walks in our door. THE EVERYDAY VIEW

MERCHANDISE

• Assess customer's individual merchandise needs and interests in order to best recommend products
• Ensure merchandise is organized, stocked, tracked, reported, sold and inventoried accurately, both in the stock room and store
• Maintain appropriate inventory display and quantities throughout the day, as well as quarterly reporting

COFFEE

• Regularly monitor quality of beverages being served and know what appropriate action to take to correct quality inconsistencies
• Recommend pour over and cold brew options to customers
• Efficient cafe station management, including a consistently clean workspace
• Possess deep knowledge of all things related to coffee, from processing, to preparation
• Possess the desire to learn more about coffee as well as other aspects of the company
• Willing to organize demos at grocery stores and events, both internal and off-site

BEER SERVING

• Move and re-stock kegs, reporting inventory and line changes at end of each shift
• Anticipate and respond to guest needs and recommend beers based on their described tastes
• Effectively, calmly, and professionally communicate with the staff and public in a variety of situations, including interacting with intoxicated guests in a positive and safety-minded manner
• Adhere to and enforce all applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations, maintain all safety and sanitation standards

ALL

• Greet all guests entering the facility promptly and courteously
• Be an expert in all things Modern Times history and heritage, history of brewing and brewing process, the coffee and craft beer industry, beer and coffee styles and ingredients, and have basic sales knowledge
• Share passion for all things retail, specialty coffee and craft beer related, as well as the ability to taste, describe and evaluate qualities and characteristics
• Have an overall awareness of the restaurant to ensure all aspects of it are clean, presentable and inviting
• Take initiative and ownership over all areas of the entire facility including the tables, chairs, floors, window sills, wall and other surfaces
• Perform opening/running/closing duties according to Modern Times policy and procedure including but not limited to basic cleaning tasks, and daily and weekly side work duties
• Execute transactions, exchanges, and refunds through our POS system
• Reinforce and provide accountability for all cash handling processes including credit card, traveler's check, and gift certificate transactions
• Greet and assist consumers, management, and accounts as a representative of the brand at all times, maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor that is friendly, enthusiastic, energetic, and outgoing
• Identify future opportunities for Modern Times through consumer dialogue and event activation
• Work independently and as a team player and able to interact with all levels within the organization, collaborating with peers and leaders to create a successful retail program
• Handle multiple tasks at one time efficiently and with an upbeat, friendly attitude in a fast-paced environment
• Other tasks may be assigned as needed

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
• Able to pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check
• Associate Degree or equivalent work experience required
• Minimum of 2 years professional retail and customer service industry experience required
• LEAD or state/local responsible alcohol serving certification required
• Valid ServSafe, State, or applicable county Food Handler Certification required
• Previous retail/customer service industry experience required
• Evening, weekend, and holiday availability required
• Prior knowledge of cash handling, calculator skills, guest relations, register skills, cash outs and salesmanship required
• Cicerone certification preferred
• Comprehensive knowledge of Modern Times products, history and heritage preferred
• Knowledge of craft beer and specialty coffee preferred
• Strong interpersonal skills and a love for meeting and interacting with people
• Thorough attention to detail and desire to take initiative
• Must adhere to company's policies and procedures
• The desire to work in a fast-paced, growing company

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

• Able to be active for prolonged periods
• Able to regularly lift, push, or pull up to 60 pounds
• Able to maneuver packages of any weight above 75 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance
• Able to stoop, crawl, twist, turn, lift, and kneel
• Able to lift heavy objects to shoulder height
• Able to regularly lift, push, or pull up to 60 pounds
• Able to both work and thrive in a high-stress environment that has a quiet to moderate noise level
• Able to read and follow written English instructions
• Able to safely navigate the tasting room and snack bar areas, including crowded spaces

• Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise and occasionally slippery floors
• Able to comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards

ABOUT MODERN TIMES

Modern Times began as a 30bbl production brewery in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850, and many of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias. Today, we're distributed throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Maui, the Pacific Northwest and select international markets. We operate a tasting room at the brewery, as well as in San Diego's North Park community, and opened brewery/restaurant locations in Portland, Los Angeles, and Encinitas in 2018, Santa Barbara and Oakland in 2019, with a new California location in Anaheim in the coming year. We brewed our first batch on May 18th, 2013; our beer went on tap for the first time on June 24th 2013; we held the soft opening for the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room on August 9th, 2013; and our Grand Opening was September 7th, 2013.

In the summer of 2017, we became California's first-ever employee-owned brewery, with 30% of the company now owned by our employees and the goal of 100% employee ownership in the future. We think that's pretty radical.
