    The FOH Liaison reports to the General Manager, as well as Assistant Tasting Room Manager(s), and works a variety of guest-facing positions within the Modern Times Tasting Room. The FOH Liaison will maintain a watchful eye on all things in the Mini Mart, run the Food Runner/Busser station, and work as Door Guardian as needed to maintain a safe but fun environment on the property. As one of the important and often first faces of our company for many of our fans, it is their job to represent Modern Times & our products in the best, most informative way possible while providing an outstanding service experience for every person who walks into our door. Candidates must share Modern Times' commitments to quality, safety, business ethics, and continuous innovation.

    FOH Liaisons will be a part of the overall tip pool within the Modern Times Tasting Room.



    • Greet all guests entering the facility promptly and courteously
    • Be an expert in all things Modern Times history and heritage, history of brewing and brewing process, the coffee and craft beer industry, beer and coffee styles and ingredients, and have basic sales knowledge
    • Share passion for all things retail, specialty coffee, and craft beer related, as well as the ability to taste, describe and evaluate qualities and characteristics
    • Have an overall awareness of the property and take initiative and ownership to ensure all aspects of it are clean, presentable, and inviting
    • Perform opening/running/closing duties according to Modern Times policy and procedure including but not limited

    to basic cleaning tasks, and daily and weekly side work duties

    • Execute transactions, exchanges, and refunds through our POS system
    • Handle all phone calls including, but not limited to, to-go orders, directions, guest complaints, and event inquiries
    • Reinforce and provide accountability for all cash handling processes including credit card, traveler's check, and gift certificate transactions
    • Greet and assist consumers, management, and accounts as a representative of the brand at all times, maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor that is friendly, enthusiastic, energetic, and outgoing
    • Identify future opportunities for Modern Times through consumer dialogue and event activation
    • Work independently and as a team player and be able to interact with all levels within the organization, collaborating with peers and leaders to create a successful retail program
    • Handle multiple tasks at one time efficiently and with an upbeat, friendly attitude in a fast-paced environment
    • Adhere to and enforce all applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations
    • Maintain all Modern Times Safety and Sanitation Standards
    • Other tasks may be assigned as needed


    • Responsible for daily cleaning, organizing, stocking, and selling of retail items, beer and coffee-to-go products, and draft beer
    • Assess customer's individual merchandise needs and interests to best recommend products
    • Ensure merchandise is organized, stocked, tracked, reported, sold, and inventoried accurately, both in the stock room and store
    • Interface with bottle club members, ensuring the accuracy of online presale order pickups, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the optimal guest experience
    • Maintain pickup appointment list via reservation management software
    • Maintain appropriate inventory display and quantities throughout the day, as well as quarterly reporting


    • Regularly monitor the quality of food and beverages being served and know what appropriate action to take to correct quality inconsistencies.
    • Deliver food to the appropriate guest(s) promptly
    • Anticipate and respond to guest needs
    • Clear and reset tables promptly and properly as needed, moving dirty tableware to the dishwashing station
    • Clean table tops, seating, & floor


    • Verify age as a minimum of 21 years with valid I.D. (children under 13 with legal guardian permitted)
    • Work with management, bar staff, and local authorities to handle non-compliant or aggressive individuals
    • Effectively, calmly, and professionally communicate with staff and public in a variety of situations


    • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
    • Able to pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check
    • Previous retail/customer service industry experience required
    • LEAD or state/local responsible alcohol serving certification required within 30 days of offer
    • Valid ServSafe, State, or applicable county Food Handler Certification required within 30 days of employment
    • Prior knowledge of cash handling, calculator skills, guest relations, register skills, cashouts, and salesmanship preferred
    • Cicerone certification preferred
    • Comprehensive knowledge of Modern Times products, history, and heritage preferred
    • Knowledge of craft beer and specialty coffee preferred
    • Strong interpersonal skills and a love for meeting and interacting with people
    • Thorough attention to detail and desire to take initiative
    • Must adhere to company's policies and procedures
    • The desire to work in a fast-paced, growing company


    • Evening, weekend, and holiday availability required

    • Able to be active for prolonged periods

    • Able to regularly lift, push, or pull up to 60 pounds

    • Able to maneuver packages of any weight above 75 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance

    • Able to stoop, crawl, twist, turn, lift, and kneel

    • Able to lift heavy objects to shoulder height

    • Able to both work and thrive in a high-stress environment that has a quiet to moderate noise level

    • Able to read and follow written English instructions

    • Able to safely navigate the tasting room and bar areas, including crowded spaces

    • Able to work in a factory/production environment that may be loud, slick, humid, cold, and hot

    • Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise and occasionally slippery floors

    • Able to comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards

    Modern Times began as a 30bbl production brewery in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850, and many of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias. Today, we're distributed throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Maui, the Pacific Northwest, and select international markets. We operate a tasting room at the brewery, as well as in San Diego's North Park community, and opened brewery/restaurant locations in Portland, Los Angeles, and Encinitas in 2018, Santa Barbara and Oakland in 2019, and Anaheim in 2020. We brewed our first batch on May 18th, 2013; our beer went on tap for the first time on June 24th, 2013; we held the soft opening for the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room on August 9th, 2013; and our Grand Opening was September 7th, 2013.

    In the summer of 2017, we became California's first-ever employee-owned brewery, with 30% of the company now owned by our employees and the goal of 100% employee ownership in the future. We think that's pretty radical.
