    TITLE: DOOR GUARDIAN 

    LOCATION: ANAHEIM, CA 

    STATUS: PART-TIME, NON-EXEMPT

    REPORTS TO: GENERAL MANAGER

    THE BIG PICTURE

    The Door Person reports to the General Manager is responsible for maintaining a fun but safe environment in the Modern Times Tasting Rooms. They should be friendly but observant of those both coming into the space and those already within. They are also our first line of defense in keeping any minors or anyone else without a valid ID out of the tasting rooms. If/When the situation calls for it, they can deal with customers who need to be asked to leave in a patient but persuasive manner. Candidates must share Modern Times' commitment to quality, safety, business ethics, and continuous innovation.

    THE EVERYDAY VIEW

    • Work regular shifts in the tasting room (manning the door, managing capacity, bussing as needed and able, trash)
    • Verify age as a minimum of 21 years with valid I.D. (children under 13 with legal guardian permitted)
    • Prevent already intoxicated persons or groups from entering the premises
    • Monitor general rowdiness and intoxication level of guests and communicate as necessary with bar staff
    • Work with bar staff and the police to deal with non-compliant or aggressive individuals
    • Remove guests from the premises who have been asked to leave
    • Greet guests with reservations, special events tickets, or picking up purchased items, and notify the appropriate staff of their arrival
    • Assist in closing clean-up (final bussing and trash)
    • Effectively, calmly, and professionally communicate professionally with staff and public in a variety of situations
    • Adhere to and enforce all applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations 
    • Maintain all safety and sanitation standards
    • During serious emergencies, may be assigned to assist in the evacuation of the tasting room
    •   Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor
    • Be a team player and able to interact with all levels within the organization 
    • Adhere to and enforce all applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations 
    • Other tasks as needed

    DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

    • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
    • Able to pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check 
    • Minimum 1 year of professional customer service experience required
    •   Minimum 1 year of professional security or door staff experience preferred 
    •   Minimum 1 year of professional bar/service industry experience preferred
    • California Guard Card preferred
    •   Ability to do basic arithmetic to determine valid age of patrons required
    • Strong interpersonal skills and a love for meeting and interacting with people
    • Thorough attention to detail and desire to take initiative
    • Must adhere to company's policies and procedures
    •   Able to work both independently and in a team environment

     

    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Able to work evening, weekend and holidays
    • Able to maneuver packages of any weight above 75 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance 
    • Able to stoop, crawl, twist, turn, lift, and kneel
    • Able to lift heavy objects to shoulder height
    • Able to both work and thrive in a high-stress environment that has a quiet to moderate noise level
    • Able to read and follow written instructions
    • Able to safely navigate the tasting room areas, including crowded spaces
    • Able to work in a factory/production environment that may be loud, slick, humid, cold, and hot
    • Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise and occasionally slippery floors
    • Able to comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards

    ABOUT MODERN TIMES

    Modern Times began as a 30bbl production brewery in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850, and many of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias. Today, we're distributed throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Maui, the Pacific Northwest, and select international markets. We operate a tasting room at the brewery, as well as in San Diego's North Park community, and opened brewery/restaurant locations in Portland, Los Angeles, and Encinitas in 2018, Santa Barbara and Oakland in 2019, and Anaheim in 2020. We brewed our first batch on May 18th, 2013; our beer went on tap for the first time on June 24th, 2013; we held the soft opening for the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room on August 9th, 2013; and our Grand Opening was September 7th, 2013.

    In the summer of 2017, we became California's first-ever employee-owned brewery, with 30% of the company now owned by our employees and the goal of 100% employee ownership in the future. We think that's pretty radical.
