Job Description
We could have run a boring old "Legal Assistant " type of ad, but that's not how we do things here. We are looking for a “Rock Star Team Member” – someone who has a service-oriented frame of mind even before the day’s first cup of coffee; someone who enjoys learning something new every day, but also can manage the routine work that must be done to keep cases moving forward; and someone who is motivated by the desire to perform the highest quality work to serve our clients.
Our goal at Morain & Buckelew, LLC, is to provide quality, compassionate legal services to our clients and their families in a timely fashion. Our firm represents clients who have sustained personal injuries (sometimes minor, sometimes catastrophic) due to the negligence of others. We litigate claims frequently and prepare all our cases for litigation. The firm is growing and we’re looking to add a legal assistant to the practice.
WE VALUE OUR EMPLOYEES AND OFFER THE FOLLOWING:
· Flexible hours
· Vacation time: 1 week at six months’ employment; 2 weeks at one year
· Sick days
· Personal days
· Nine holidays
· Casual Fridays
· Coffee, tea and snacks
· Free convenient parking
WHO SHOULD APPLY FOR THIS JOB?
This is a new position in our firm and will give you the opportunity to set the standard. The person we hire will have great time-management and task-management skills. Our ideal candidate will have 3 – 5 years of experience in a law office and will excel at the following skills:
· Motivating himself / herself and taking initiative to work effectively for clients and in evolving the law firm
· Maintaining and marshalling case information and office tools (physical and digital) so that all team members can easily access what they need to advance cases
· Coordinating and tracking tasks assigned to remote workers
· Processing information received through email, loading that information onto our systems quickly and accurately
· Maintaining the attorney’s calendar, including but not limited to calling clients, witnesses, lawyers, and outside vendors to schedule interviews, meetings, and depositions
· Communicating verbally and in writing politely, respectfully, and professionally, in a clear and concise manner, with team members, clients, and other professionals (even if they don’t reciprocate).
· Working on a computer (a Macintosh, not Windows) with a wide variety of programs and applications, using the Internet (are you “tech savvy”?), and generally finding a way to get something done
· Following established protocols and instructions while looking to streamline and improve processes
· Keeping his/her desk organized and free of clutter
· Gathering and arranging evidence and other legal documents for attorney review and case preparation
· Electronically filing exhibits, briefs, appeals and other legal documents with the court and opposing counsel
· Creating and maintaining customer relationship management systems
· Researching and implementing the use of innovative applications to improve efficiency
· Performing other administrative duties such as filing and photocopying in an efficient and timely manner.
Some of these tasks will need to be completed simultaneously and precisely. Therefore, the person we hire must have impeccable attention to detail.
The person we hire will be self-reliant. This person will ask questions but will never make excuses.
Most importantly, the person we hire will approach every part of this job with an open mind and have a willingness to learn "our way" of doing things.
WHO SHOULD NOT APPLY FOR THIS JOB?
· If you were the student who needed mom and dad to remind you about your homework and your projects, this isn't the job for you.
· If you are already set in your ways and aren't willing to learn "our way", this isn't the job for you.
· If you expect someone else to clean your coffee cup, remove old food from the refrigerator, or tell you when the trash can needs emptied, this isn’t the job for you.
· If you are a "whiner" or a "complainer" or a "know-it-all", this isn't the job for you.
· If you’re a problem adopter, and not a problem solver, or you’re more interested in fixing blame than in fixing problems, this isn’t the job for you.
· If you graduated high school or college and still don't know the difference between "there", "their", and "they're" or you use possessive pronouns instead of plurals, this isn't the job for you.
To be considered for this position, please submit a resume detailing your past job experiences and a cover letter telling us why you are searching for a new position and why you believe you are the best candidate for this position. Automatically generated inquiries or responses that show us that you cannot follow directions will be disregarded.
The body of the cover letter should explain your interest in our firm, any experience you have with personal injury practices, and your understanding of the requirements for this job. Of course, all résumés will be received in the strictest of confidence.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
No phone calls or walk-in applications will be accepted.
