    Job Description

    SUMMARY: The underwriting manager coordinates and directs the daily operation of the underwriting department as a unit and supports the underwriting process. You will assign work and set workflow priorities, tracking the departments’ performance and monitoring daily business. You will handle exception items, resolve complex issues, coordinate and oversee departmental projects, document and introduce new programs and procedures to your staff. It will also be your responsibility to review and recommend system modifications.    

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Direct supervision of the underwriting department, involving responsibility for results in terms of management, methods, personnel and policy development.
    • Responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the underwriting “team”.
    • Interviewing, hiring and training employees.
    • Performance appraisals.
    • Rewarding and disciplining employees.
    • Communications changes in underwriting policy and procedures.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position:

    • Ability to manage people
    • Strong team building skills
    • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Have knowledge of Database software, Internet software; spreadsheet software and word processing software
    • Ability to follow complex methods and procedures in diverse, routine and non-routine tasks
    • Ability to plan and prioritize
    • Detailed knowledge of underwriting, investor and agency guidelines, including HUD, VA and HFA (Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac)

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    • 5+ years work experience in underwriting (or specialized education plus a minimum of 3+ years experience, including supervisory work)
    • Direct Endorsement (D.E.)
    • VA underwriting designation/SAR (Staff Appraisal Reviewer) preferred

    COMPUTER SKILLS:

    To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of:

    ·            Microsoft Office

    ·            Internet software
