Academic Year Internship Program Details

Program Dates: September 21, 2026 – April 23, 2027

Time Commitment: 16-24 hours per week. Exact schedule to be determined based on business need. We will do our best to accommodate course schedules.

Format: Opportunities listed will require an intern to work from Universal City, CA.

Universal Television Entertainment is responsible for world-class television entertainment. The division programs and markets content across leading entertainment brands Bravo, NBC and Peacock, and produces over 3,000 hours of television annually through Universal Studio Group, the studio business comprised of Universal Television, UCP, Universal International Studios and Universal Television Alternative Studio.

Universal Film consists of the operations to produce, acquire, market and distribute filmed entertainment worldwide in various media formats for theatrical, home entertainment, television and other distribution platforms. Areas of placement may include, but are not limited to:

• Corporate ****Legal – ****Music Business & Legal Affairs (JD-level): **** NBCUniversal Music Business & Legal Affairs services an array of clients in the Film & Television portfolios. The overall landscape of Film includes distinct business functions that each touch a key segment area in the overall lifecycle of a film, from ideation to premiere. On the TV side, there is a vast portfolio of sports, news networks, streaming, entertainment networks, and significant television production operations, including scripted, alternative and late night, and a leading television stations group. This intern’s responsibilities may include the following: researching music rights, analysing and summarizing music deal terms, drafting music talent agreements, reviewing production content for music information, and assisting with tracking rights, analysis, and grid maintenance.
• Film Music Creative: The Film Music intern will support the team that oversees the selection and commissioning of film composers; the monetization, management, and publishing of the music created by those composers for our films; and the selection, clearance, and licensing of third-party/commercial music for Universal-produced films.
• Film Music Publishing: The Music Publishing intern will help support the team responsible for monetizing and managing the studio’s film assets as it relates to film music, film score, theme songs, etc. by way of licensing to third parties.
• **Music Business & Legal Affairs (undergrad-level): **The Music Business & Legal Affairs team supports various clients across NBCUniversal, including Sports, Late Night, Specials, Telemundo, News/ Owned Stations, and Scripted. They are experts in music licensing and administration and help our clients navigate music use within television (everything from research to payments). The role of the Music Business & Legal Affairs intern is to support the overall team – they will gain valuable training and a balanced experience by participating in day-to-day operations. Responsibilities include researching copyright information, creating and updating music cue sheets, databases, tracking grids, and more.
• USG Television Music Creative: The role of the TV Music Creative Services intern is to support the staff while obtaining a well-rounded view of how the music and television industries function together. This experience will allow the intern to understand the activities of a music services department and what it takes to get music placed in television. The intern will engage in music clearance, listen to new music received, search our internal music library, and evaluate tracks for potential use. The intern will assist with day-to-day activities and various research projects relating to both the creative and business affairs sides of the department. In addition, we will provide the intern with experiential learning on the process of clearing and licensing music for programming produced by Universal Studio Group and for promos across NBCUniversal marketing.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• Must be actively enrolled in a degree-granting program at an accredited institution during the entire duration of the program (September 2026 through April 2027). December 2026 graduates are not eligible for this Academic Year Internship Program.
• Current class standing of sophomore or above (30 credits).
• Must be presently authorized to work for any employer in the United States and must not require work visa sponsorship from NBCUniversal now or in the future to retain authorization to work in the United States.
• Must be available to work 16-24 hours per week from September 21, 2026 – April 23, 2027.
• Must be willing to work in Universal City, CA.

For further clarification, candidates currently on any student or exchange visa (e.g. F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, J-1, M-1) are not eligible to apply unless they will be able to change or adjust to another status that grants work authorization without NBCUniversal sponsorship.

Desired Characteristics:

• Students with class standing of junior or above preferred.
• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Strong interest in music and/or transactional work.
• Strong interest in the media industry.
• Self-starter, professional, and ability to adapt.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
• For Corporate Legal – Music Business & Legal Affairs (JD-level): **** Must be a current J.D. candidate in good standing; Ability to understand music related concepts and contractual language is a plus; Strong interest in music and/or transactional work.
• **For Music Business & Legal Affairs (undergrad-level): **Knowledge of music-related concepts such as PROs, Cue Sheets, and Clearance terminology preferred. ****
• For USG TV Music: Ability to understand music-related concepts and industry terms; Previous experience with music industry software (SourceAudio and DISCO); Experience with music publishing research using industry websites such as ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, GMR, and the MLC; Familiarity with where to find licensing information on various platforms such as Spotify, Discogs, AllMusic, and Tunefind.

The hourly rate for undergraduate student interns is $19.00.

The hourly rate for law student interns is $25.00.
