    Job Description

    The Assignment Editor plays a significant role in the day-to-day execution of NBC Connecticut’s multiplatform news strategy. The role combines attention to detail, rapid response, editorial judgment, consistent day-to-day execution within a 24/7 newsgathering operation. This person will also manage the coordination of day-to-day assignments for the station’s field crews.

    Here You Can:

    • Break stories, work contacts, and react quickly and aggressively to breaking news.
    • Gather information for newscasts, set up stories in advance, and assist newscast producer in all aspects of the show.
    • Monitor police and emergency scanners and electronic sources for news.
    • Use social media tools to monitor and report news, find sources, and leads for stories.
    • When assigned, participate in long-term planning for station initiatives and big stories.
    • Enterprise story ideas.
    • Participate in daily editorial meetings.
    • Dispatch crews and information in a timely and organized manner. Coordinate reporters, photographers, and other personnel to cover stories.
    • Set up and coordinate live remotes inside and outside the building.
    • Multi-task and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
    • Coordinate with other Assignment Editors and the Managing Editor for carry-over of stories from day to day.
    • Develop and cultivate contacts within the community for news stories.
    • Establish a network of contacts and sources across Connecticut.
    • Cooperate with and support NBC News, Newschannel and other Owned Television stations.
    • Produce content for the NBC Connecticut digital platforms
    • Write and publish local news content on the NBCConnecticut.com website, our mobile apps, social media platforms and other properties
    • Learn how to publish video, images and text including publishing to social media platforms.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree or other equivalent experience
    • At least 1 year experience including: work in a broadcast news environment, coordinating assignments, generating story ideas.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of AP Style writing and guidelines

    _ Desired Qualifications_

    • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications.
    • Candidate must be a self-starter, with good telephone skills, excellent organizational skills, strong news judgment and good instincts. Ability to solve problems, prioritize decisions and act decisively under stress and tight deadlines.
    • Thorough knowledge of the logistics aspect of deploying personnel and equipment for the purpose of electronic newsgathering.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
    • Strong interpersonal skills. Team player.
    • Has the ability to seek simple solutions to complex problems.
    • Thorough knowledge of the logistics aspect of deploying personnel and equipment for the purpose of electronic newsgathering.
    • Show producing or field producing.
    • Proficient in Social Media platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
