Job Description
NBC News Digital is seeking an ambitious, creative and enterprising journalist to become its inaugural sports editor. This person will be responsible for developing and executing a strategy for sports coverage that resonates with a general news audience. We’re looking for someone comfortable with experimenting at the outset, tapping into the sports coverage and news that will resonate with our readers.
This won’t be assigning game stories or living in incremental news better found on social media. Instead, we’re looking for someone who can tackle the huge, major events on the calendar (like the Super Bowl and NBA Draft), can identify the big moments and explain them to non-sports fans, and can recognize how sports and sports news intersects with the zeitgeist and general audience.
This editor will want to react to big breaking news and live blog the week’s most notable games and events. The editor will also be adaptable and willing to experiment with various storytelling formats, such as a breakdown of a key video.
This person will be a natural collaborator who can tap into the existing infrastructure around the organization, working with NBC Sports, local stations, the Regional Sports Networks to deliver the best report to the NBCNews.com audience.
The direct team will include one to two reporters to start, and the editor will work closely with other teams across Digital. The set hours will be when sports happens — afternoon and evening hours from Thursday-Monday. This person will report to the Managing Editor for News.
