    Job Description

    NBC News Digital is hiring an editor to join its team focused on diversity coverage, working closely with editors and reporters for NBC Asian America, NBCBLK, NBC Latino and NBC Out produce award-winning journalism that is urgent, exclusive and distinct. 

    The successful candidate will be an ambitious journalist with strong editorial judgment, demonstrated interest in covering communities as a beat and elevating those stories to the national stage. You should have at least two years of experience editing for a major news outlet and experience covering politics and/or culture is a plus. 

    Your main job will be supporting editorial directors in shepherding copy to publication, which will include everything from working closely with reporters to develop pitches to working with copy editors to resolve final questions before publication. You will also need to spot interesting trends and storylines for the teams and pitch them to editors and reporters. You will be able to tell stories rooted in the news that both resonate with the communities we cover and draw the interest of NBC News’ broad audience. 

    The position can involve developing ideas, rigorous line editing, working with writers, art and photo editors, video producers and more. You will focus on storytelling for both a desktop and a mobile audience and will understand the power of social media for reporting, discovery and distribution. You will know when stories require original art, digital video and/or data graphics.

    This role can be based in New York or Los Angeles and will require evening ET hours.  It will report to the senior editorial director who oversees all four verticals.

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    • Working with editorial directors, assigning and editing stories from staff and freelance writers. Editing duties might range from developmental edits to copy edits. 
    • Help with breaking news and generating original story ideas and fresh angles for the big stories of the day.
    • Ensure the tone of and mix of stories is in line with NBC News Digital editorial strategy, and the voice and standards of NBC News Digital.
    • Share information and collaborate with all NBC News platforms in a timely fashion.
    • Help set editorial agenda and develop story ideas to pursue.
    • Work with a strong team of reporters and assign them to the day’s top stories, provide rigorous edits and work with them to find new ways to turn raw reporting into compelling digital content.
    • Make full use of the range of NBC News resources, including network newsgathering and multimedia, and finding ways to make the network’s extensive video and reporting assets available on digital.
    • Work closely with other editors on daily and special projects.
    • Read widely and stay abreast and ahead of the competition. 
    • Developing rigorous reporting and excellence in storytelling and writing, and mentoring younger reporters who want to elevate their game into long-form work. 
    • Building and managing a network of freelancers and contributors to supplement in-house talent.
    • Establish and meet rigid guidelines. 
    • Perform myriad production and some administrative tasks, including producing wire copy, as needed.
    • Participate in special projects, pitch fresh ideas, and assist Senior News Editor as needed.
    • Working with a range of journalistic talent from both digital and TV to produce political journalism that sets us apart. This includes digital staff members, television reporters and producers, and freelancers.

    • Committed to quality in every assignment, large or small

    • Must be willing and able to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays and overnights, under tight deadline pressure, occasionally with little or no warning (e.g. breaking news)
