    NEEDED: RESPIRATORY THERAPIST – PULMONARY

    LOCATION: 3350 LA JOLLA VILLAGE DRIVE, SAN DIEGO, CA 92161

    UNIT: PULMONARY

    STATUS: FULL-TIME, PRN

    HOURS: Pulmonary Respiratory Therapists will be expected to be available 24/7, including holidays. The normal tour of duty is a 10-hour day and 40 hours per week.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Education: Completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy (RT) Program
    • Experience: 1 year experience, including critical care (if working in Pulmonary)
    • Licensure: Respiratory Care Board of California
    • Certifications: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credential issued by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)
    • All Registered Respiratory Therapist working in Pulmonary shall be certified in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

    RESPONSIBILITIES: RESPIRATORY THERAPISTS ASSIGNED TO PULMONARY.

    • A Pulmonary Respiratory Therapist is a specialized healthcare practitioner who has graduated from a college or a university and passed a national board certifying examination.
    • Respiratory therapists educate and treat people who are suffering from heart and lung problems. They often collaborate with specialists in Pulmonary, Emergency Department (ED), and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in various aspects of clinical care of patients.
    • Respiratory Therapists are specialists in airway management and mechanical ventilation.
    • They may be responsible for initiating and managing life support devices for people in ICU and ED, as well as administering and monitoring patient response to inhaled drugs and medical gases.
    • All therapy, patient procedures and interventions will be completed in a safe manner and in accordance with all VA San Diego approved Policies and Procedures.
    • RTP shall administer and monitor therapeutic medical gases to include oxygen, nitric oxide, and Heliox using appropriate devices.
    • Perform airway humidification using various devices to include aerosols and high flow systems. Inhaled administration of aerosolized medications using appropriate devices, to include bronchodilators, mucolytics and antibiotics.
    • Shall perform lung inflation strategies to include the MetaNeb, and Incentive Spirometry Limited bedside pulmonary function testing to include Vital Capacity (VC), Negative Inspiratory Force (NIF), and Minute Ventilation (Ve) measurements.
    • Perform secretion clearance using various high frequency oscillation and cough assist devices.
    • Shall perform safe endotracheal, nasotracheal, and orotracheal suctioning using both open and closed systems.
    • Perform chest Physiotherapy and postural drainage by both manual and mechanical means.
    • Shall set up and monitor non-invasive ventilation devices using modes such as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), Automatic Positive Airway Pressure (APAP), and Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BIPAP). Intubation and extubation assisting in accordance with approved policies and procedures.
    • Shall set-up, use, monitor, and troubleshoot various acute care and transport ventilators; Implement, monitor, and troubleshoot various ventilation modes including volume, pressure and spontaneous.
    • Respond to Code Blues and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation as indicated; Assist with intubation, extubation and securement of artificial airways; Respond to Rapid Response Calls, perform patient assessments, and make recommendations based on assessment.
    • Complete Bronchoscopy set-up, assistance, and pre-cleaning.
    • Obtain sputum specimens for lab analysis.
    • Perform Arterial puncture and blood gas analysis.
    • Complete Home Oxygen patient assessments and assist the Home Oxygen Clinic as requested.
    • Provide patient and/or family education as indicated.
    • Recognition of the need for medical intervention if patient safety is at risk.
