Under direction, in a centralized communication center as trainee and productive worker, learns to perform varied types of communication work; does related work.
NOTE: The newly created State Parole Board’s Communication Center will provide support to parole supervision staff by receiving, interpreting, transmitting and coordinating communications and activities in the center. The Communication Center operation hours are 24/7/365, with a 40-hour work week. This position is an (emergency) essential title and requires preparedness to work on any assigned shift to include: weekends and holidays; times of extreme weather; natural and manmade technological disasters. Duties will include but not be limited to responding to messages received through various electronic means, receiving, prioritizing and determining appropriate responses to incoming communications including urgent or emergency messages; relaying messages and other communications to parole supervision staff and evaluating alert data concerning potential violations by offenders, subject to electronic monitoring and initiating appropriate actions in accordance with agency procedures.
SPECIAL NOTE: Preference will be given to those individuals who have experience in emergency response, a computer aided dispatch (CAD) and/or radio dispatch pertaining to law enforcement operations.
NOTE: All candidates must undergo and successfully pass a criminal background check in order to be considered for this position, in accordance with Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) requirements and be subject to fingerprinting. Upon successful completion of the twelve (12) month training period, appointee will be eligible for advancement under the Civil Service Commission procedures to the title Communications Operator.
REQUIREMENTS: License: Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
RESIDENCY LAW: Effective September 1, 2011, N.J.S.A 52:14-7 (NJ First Act), requires all State employees to reside in New Jersey, unless exempted under the law, or current employees who live out-of-state and do not have a break-in service of more than 7 calendar days, as they are "grandfathered." New employees or current employees who were not grandfathered and who live out-of-state have one year after the date of employment to relocate their residence to New Jersey or request an exemption. Current employees who reside in NJ must retain NJ residency, unless he/she obtains an exemption. Employees who fail to meet the residency requirements or obtain an exemption will be removed from employment.

As required by law, appointed parole board members and staff conduct approximately 13,500 hearings per year, solicit input from victims, and decide upon parole matters.
