    Overall Responsibility:

    To establish guidelines to identify the professional qualifications and skills required for employment Phase II Recovery Unit and pre-operative area. It is the Phase II Recovery Room/Outpatient Nurse’s responsibility to formulate and execute the nursing care for patients of all ages in the pre-operative area and the Phase II recovery area to ensure the patients receives the highest quality of care, that their safety is ensured according to policy and procedure, and to instigate and execute all other tasks as requested by the Chief Nursing Officer.

    Key tasks and responsibilities:


    Pain Center Pre-operative:

    1. Prepares pre-operatively for patient admission according to Hospital policies and procedures.
    2. Demonstrates knowledge of drug usage, their actions and side effects, and expected patient outcomes.
    3. Recognizes emergency situation, responds quickly and efficiently following policy and procedure, ACLS, PALS, physician orders or emergency plan to prevent adverse patient outcomes.
    4. Maintains knowledge and adheres to policies/procedure, care standards for Pre-operative care.
    5. Ensures patient meets admit requirements before patient goes for surgery:
    6. Provides verbal instructions to family or responsible party during pre-operative period about the whole surgical experience.
    7. Documents that assessments, interventions and patient outcomes are performed according to policy and procedure and Hospital standards.
    8. Restocks supplies/equipment in area to maintain adequate levels for patient care.
    9. Medications are checked for expiration dates.
    10. Supplies/medications are rotated so that outdates are at a minimum.
    11. Demonstrates continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for individuals based upon age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective.
    12. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competence of designated skills identified for position.
    13. Performs appropriate nursing duties during procedures that pertain to pain management using current nursing standards as well as Hospital standards.
    14. Completes all documentation in Cerner to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.
    15. Adheres to established Hospital safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
    16. Demonstrates the safe operation of equipment and machinery and follows procedures for reporting and correcting an unsafe situation.
    17. Demonstrates the importance of continuing education to the performance of Hospital responsibilities and growth in profession.
    18. Communicates patient information to assure confidentiality and continuity of care.
    19. Interacts with all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees in a mature, responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional Hospital environment.

    Phase II Recovery Room Nurse:

    1. Obtain report from the Operative or PACU Nurse.
    2. Place patient on all appropriate monitors.
    3. Maintain patient’s airway.
    4. Monitor respiratory and circulatory status by monitoring patient vital signs every 15 minutes until stable and discharged home.
    5. Assess level of consciousness and promote reactivity.
    6. Assess operative sites, invasive lines, and dressing.
    7. Administer medications as ordered.
    8. Follow doctor’s orders.
    9. Promote patient comfort and privacy.
    10. Implement nursing care plan.
    11. Offer liquids when patient able to tolerate.
    12. Discontinue patient intravenous line when patient has been stabilized and the Aldrete score has been met.
    13. Maintain patient comfort.
    14. Give postoperative instructions according to doctor’s orders.
    15. Communicate with patient, family, surgeon, anesthesia provider, and facility staff.
    16. Serve as a liaison between patient family and patient care area.
    17. Maintain continuity by reporting on patient condition, status, within the post-operative area or changes in the caregiver.
    18. Monitor environment and patient safety, comfort, traffic pattern, team attire, product, and team efficiency.
    19. If indicated, assist in the transfer of patient designated room.
    20. Complete post-operative calls.
    21. Will institute and execute all other tasks requested by his/her supervisor.
    22. Discharge patient according to physicians orders and take to curb in a wheelchair.

    Required Skills

    Licensure and Certification:

    1. BLS certification required within 30 days of hire. ACLS/PALS, if not current, certification within 6 months of hire.
    2. Requires degree or diploma from an accredited school of nursing with active registration from the board of nursing registration and nurse education, state of Oklahoma.

    Required Experience

    Experience required:

    1. Minimum of one year experience as a Pain or Phase II nurse.
