    POSITION SUMMARY: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Sr Media Relations Specialist-Research.      Position Summary  The Senior Media Relations Specialist for Research is a newly-created position. Reporting directly under the Director of Communications-Research, the incumbent is principally responsible for creating press releases, news pitches, videos and social media content for NYU Langone Healths basic, translational, and clinical science milestones and larger research enterprise, and for promoting these services accordingly. In addition to the Director, the incumbent will work closely with basic science and clinical investigators and certain members of administration to identify key locations, programs and practitioners to highlight and promote through media relations outreach and story pitching. The responsibilities go beyond covering single-published studies to systematically tracking research efforts to identify key media opportunities well ahead of announcements. This function also includes creating trust with researchers such they respect our departments decision to not develop press releases for some studies, a key deliverable as our new expanded team write perhaps 90 press releases per year out of the 4,000 produced by the enterprise. As this job description pertains to research, the incumbent will lead focused activities to promote the following: key basic, translational, public health, and clinical discoveries Certain clinical programs and services, as they pertain to research discoveries unique patient experiences and interesting physician-patient-staff interactions The overarching goal would be to effectively develop and execute strategic public relations programs to promote NYU Langone Healths research mission and vision to be a world-class, integrated academic medical center. Principally, the incumbent will conduct and organize a full range of public relations/media activities for the research enterprise, including: overseeing development and implementation of proactive outreach initiatives; identifying and managing a master list of researchers and investigators for third-party news commentary; fulfilling incoming media requests for experts, as needed; and serving as key contact for national and local media outlets. In addition, the incumbent will have daily interaction with the media as well as with certain NYU Langone Health faculty and leadership. Time management, critical thinking skills, the ability to work well in a team setting, initiative and flexibility are all important in this role. This person needs to have enthusiasm and the drive to succeed as well as a passion for health care in an academic medical center setting. The ability to work quickly, efficiently and have excellent writing, computer and organizational skills are a must. Position Summary: Clinical Support The senior media relations specialist for research also plays a key support role with respect to the staff positions that currently comprise the clinical-practice-focused corporate media relations team. The clinical team members do, on occasion, work directly on research stories originating from their respective clinical areas. With the clinical team more and more focused on news pitches that drive patients into clinical practices, however, this new position will play a larger, consistent role in partnering with clinical staff to cover clinical research milestones (e.g. clinical trial results, Phase 3 study publications, etc.) arising from clinical departments, writing press releases and/or conducting media outreach as agreed upon by the joint team and milestone by milestone. The goal of this role and related work is to provide a reputational research halo around clinical departments that are priorities in terms of increased patient recruitment and to support those departments that singularly generate media attention, which contributes to institutional reputation building.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Oversee the creation and implementation of communications strategies that support the Communications and Marketing strategic plan; ensure all messaging is aligned with PR programming o Responsible for identification and creation of pitch topics/experts for news stories and draft and disseminate press releases as appropriate
    • o Direct media training for physicians and leaders and other research faculty and staff in advance of interviews, including development of talking points, Q&As and practice interviews
    • o Manage, provide guidance and accompany media on interviews/filming on-site as necessary
    • o Oversight of internal approval processes for all PR materials and initiatives specific to his/her strategic areas
    • Manage and expand current relationships and foster new connections with critical local, national and international health, business and consumer reporters across all channels of media, particularly those that cover research
    • Work closely with clinical partners as well as Marketing & Communications colleagues (marketing/advertising, publications, internal communications, Digital and Web Communications, etc.) on top priorities, to ensure alignment of communication priorities and messages
    • Manage outside communications agency on specific research media relations projects to maximize results
    • Manage, provide guidance and accompany media on interviews/filming on site as necessary
    • Support media relations efforts including media list development and updating (key local, national and international health, business and consumer reporters across all channels of media including online and social media), daily media monitoring, pitching and ongoing results reports
    • Provide content for social media channels including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram on a weekly basis
    • Strategize and implement special initiatives/events to highlight expertise of experts in strategic areas; work with marketing, digital, internal colleagues as needed
    • Working with Director of Communications-Research and others, help manage crisis PR centering on research
    • Contribute to research team reports and maintain documentation regarding public relations activities consistent with Office policy and procedures (e.g., regular research project preview and results reports
    • Assist with NYU Langone Healths Daily Media Report, as needed
    • Other duties as assigned

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: o Bachelors degree in journalism, public relations or communications o Minimum 5 years of experience in communications, public relations, media and/or media management, or a strongly related field; healthcare industry experience preferred o Must have excellent written, oral and interpersonal communications skills o Proven track record of success in public relations o Willingness to travel, as necessary, to regional and national meetings at which promotable research is being presented Media Relations o In-depth knowledge of the public relations landscape, with an expertise in promoting research on a global and national level o Ability to identify news worthiness of issues and gauge appropriateness of topics for coverage in specific media outlets o Existing relationships with key local and national health care reporters o Knowledge of standard public relations tools and techniques o Experience in handling crisis communications and issues management Healthcare Expertise o Knowledge of medicine, science or health care field o In-depth knowledge of basic science and research and current issues in health care / academic medical centers o Ability to translate complex health care information for the lay audience o Proven track record of health and health care delivery system knowledge Personal Skills o Strong writing and editing skills o Strong interpersonal communications skills o Ability to develop effective messages aligned with goals of the organization
