    POSITION SUMMARY: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Plant Manager-Cogeneration. In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for operations, maintenance and repair and project management for: Combined cycle/cogeneration plant at the Energy Building. This plant includes a 7.5 MW gas turbine, 3 MW steam turbine, 135 kpph heat recovery steam generator, two 150 kpph boilers, six 5 MVA primary electrical feeds/transformers, 13.2 KV electrical campus electrical system as well as all auxiliaries (multiple battery plants, emergency generators, double ended substations, gas compressors and pressure stations, air handlers, etc.). Cogeneration plant at the Kimmel Pavilion. This plant includes a 3.3MW reciprocating engine plant, hot water heat recovery, gas systems and 13.2KV electrical distribution system.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Operate and maintain cogeneration plants with >95% uptime in a safe, environmentally rigorous manner. Maintain all chemical treatment operations. Manage 2x annual plant maintenance shutdowns and repairs.
    • Negotiate and maintain all service agreements. Maintain 24x7 staffing consisting of Plant Manager, 5 plant operating engineers, 6 plant operating mechanics and 1 instrument and control mechanic. Manage staff per NYULH protocols and Local 810 IBT collective bargaining unit agreement.
    • Perform daily analytics, heat balances, pollution control, electric and steam generation, labor utilization, etc. Produce monthly reports to include profit/loss, labor cost, consumables expense, boiler and gas turbine heat rates, etc. Submit quarterly pollution control reports to the NYS DEC and annual power plant reports to NYC Dept of Finance, FERC and other government entities.
    • Work on a daily basis, with the energy management department to optimize generation and minimize cost. Maintain all certificates of fitness, steam licenses, Federal/State/City permits and licenses required for the plants. Manage all cogeneration related construction projects of up to $10 million/year. Manage operating budget of $4.5 million/year
    • Maintain up-to-date as-built MEP/FP, controls, drawings and specifications in secure vault. Manage and ensure security of critical operations infrastructure technology. Maintain all safety protocols, including lockout/tagout, breaker rackouts, hearing protection, etc. Advise on plant operations at other facilities. Other duties as required.
    • Develop and maintain training programs for steam license development, cogeneration maintenance, instrument and control, etc. Develop and implement in-house instrument and control capabilities. Responsible for the development and management of an ongoing training program designed to develop in-house employees to be fully self sufficient in building automation system service and installation.
    • Works hands-on in the field with tradespeople to reinforce classroom training. Supervise 11 bargaining unit staff, including scheduling, discipline, approvals for time off and performance evaluations.
    • Manage all cogeneration related construction projects of up to $10 million/year. Review plans and specifications for new cogeneration and central plant opportunities at other NYU Langone developments, such as NYU Winthrop and NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn as well as Real Estate off-sites. Assist and start-up and commissioning of all central plant installations.
    • Adheres to departmental guidelines concerning time, vacation, personal days and other paid/unpaid leaves. Arrives on time for work and meetings. Provides proper notification for absences or tardiness.
    • Adheres to departmental Medical Center guidelines concerning safety, rules of conduct, etc. as outlined in the Employee Staff Handbook. Maintains a professional appearance; wears identification badge at all times

     

    ADDITIONAL POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Respond to emergency situations as required. Be available for emergency calls on a 24 hour basis (cell phone). Work weekend shifts on a rotational basis as scheduled or needed. Performs other duties as required. This description is intended to be used as a general guideline.     MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Will consider experience in lieu of engineering degree NYC high pressure steam license. REQUIRED LICENSES: NYC Refigeration Engr Lic

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: BS degree in an engineering or equivalent. Will consider experience in lieu of engineering degree. NYC high pressure steam license. Certificates of Fitness for fire life safety director, battery maintenance, fuel oil handling, etc. 5-10 years power plant experience; cogeneration and combined cycle plant management a plus as is experience with gas turbine-generators. Supervisory experience with unionized work force required. KEY KNOWLEDGE AREAS: All aspects of power plant operation; boiler experience a must, cogeneration experience preferred. Working knowledge of Microsoft office suite applications and MS project. Contract management and vendor negotiations; budget management in a complex organizations
