    POSITION SUMMARY: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Clinical Liaison-Rehab Therapy. In this role, the successful candidate Responsible for coordinating the preadmission screening program for the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at both the 17th Street and 34th Street campuses. Assesses and recommends potential patients for admission. Works closely with Rusk Patient Access, Rusk Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physiatrists, Rusk nursing and other professional departments (as appropriate) on a daily basis to facilitate appropriate admissions to Rusk. The Clinical Liaison is required to have a working knowledge of all Rusk Institute Services and to assist in directing a referral and facilitating admission to the most appropriate program. Liaisons are responsible for recruitment of patients and educational marketing of the institute at referring facilities

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Adheres to departmental guidelines concerning sick time, vacation, personal days, and other paid/unpaid leaves. Does not abuse sick time or personal time. Arrives to work time.
    • Facilitates the appropriate admission of patients to inpatient services. Assesses potential candidates for transfer or admission to RIRM through on-site evaluation, review of faxed clinical information, and/or telephone follow-up, as indicated. Coordinates pre-admission review process with the physician; Patient Access; Nursing; Physical Therapy; Occupational Therapy; Speech Therapy; Social Work; Language, Cultural and Disability Services; Finance; Social Work and/or Case Management; and Pharmacy; as needed. Assesses medical stability of potential candidates for admission, as related to their ability to participate in an acute rehabilitation program and their potential need for additional services during their rehabilitation care. Makes recommendations for alternative settings when inpatient admission is not indicated.
    • Consults with admitting Rusk physician concerning potential barriers to admission, as needed, prior to offering a Rusk bed to the patient. Maintains liaison with Patient Access (and Financial Counselors, when indicated) to obtain required pre-admission financial clearance and certification. Alerts the treating team to special needs of incoming patients so that they can plan and prepare appropriately in order to meet those needs.
    • Consults with and seeks advice and guidance from colleagues and other disciplines as potential barriers to admission decisions arise. Functions as a liaison between referring health institutions and RIRM staff in assessing patients appropriateness for admission. Recommends candidates for admission. Provides personal contact with patient/family prior to admission.
    • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of all relevant regulatory standards and third party payer criteria, by incorporating these standards and criteria in pre-admission assessments.
    • Participates in the education of NYU Medical Center staff and physicians about regulatory standards and third party payer criteria, including the indications for admission, expected lengths of stay, and pre-admission screening and insurance authorization requirements.
    • Completes pre-admission documentation that is timely, individualized, thorough, informative, relevant, and accurate. Documentation gives support to acute inpatient rehabilitation admission and fulfills both CARF and CMS regulations. Identifies and documents primary rehabilitation diagnosis and etiology consistent with Medicare guidelines and updates information when necessary. Places patient in appropriate Rusk specialty program based on admitting rehabilitation diagnosis.
    • Prepares clear and concise reports of daily activity in evening logs including relevant and necessary information as needed for colleagues to follow-up on pending cases.
    • Develops and implements educational programs for other institutions to increase awareness of services provided by RIRM. Participates in NYULMC/Rusk marketing initiatives including in-services to potential referral sources and participation in community-held health/vendor fares or Rusk or NYULMC-sponsored events.
    • Provides informational tours of the facility to potential patients and/or their families and is able to articulate the highlights of the Rusk patient experience.
    • Prepares quarterly and annual reports related to the outcome of outreach efforts, status of referring relationships, and progress since the previous report. Identifies problems and trends, and develops recommendations for corrective actions. Outlines action plan/goals for upcoming reporting period.
    • Demonstrates an understanding of regulatory, accrediting and/or reimbursement agencies admissions standards (i.e. CMS, NYS Department of Health, JCAHO, third party payors and managed care companies) and Rusk inpatient admissions criteria and incorporates these into pre-admission assessment.
    • Develops short and long range plans for the accomplishment of professional goals. Understands departmental goals and sets objective in order to reach them. Utilizes audit results, quality assurance reports, and fall reports to improve the quality of services and admission-decision making.
    • Participates in cost-control activities by seeking the most effective method of delivering services and maintains an awareness of the cost impact of decisions and actions. Uses office supplies efficiently. Evaluates practices and identifies areas of excessive material and or costs.
    • Works efficiently; demonstrates appropriate time management. Coordinates the timely completion of pre-admission financial clearance with Patient Access staff.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify you must have a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Bachelor's Degree or higher in physical therapy or occupational therapy; or a medical degree (MD or DO). One year work experience. Current New York State licensure for the appropriate discipline. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's Degree in Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and/or business/health care management. Preferred minimum of three years of acute inpatient rehabilitation experience
