    POSITION SUMMARY: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Sr. Director-Public Relations and Communications. In this role, the successful candidate is a key advisor to the Executive Vice President (EVP), Communications and Marketing, senior leaders and chairs regarding external communications and media relations. S/he will direct, manage, and oversee external communications for all earned media, for NYU Langone Health (hospitals and ambulatory sites), Clinical and research findings from NYU Grossman School of Medicine and the NYU Long Island School of Medicine. This accomplished leader will build the PR and media strategy for the organization, in partnership with other members of the departments leadership team, and lead/recruit a team of professionals to develop, oversee and implement public relations strategies that promote and reinforce NYU Langones commitment to best outcomes in patient care, research and education. S/he will create and execute both proactive and reactive strategic communications strategies to promote local, regional and national awareness of NYU Langone Health across multiple communications channels, and consistently look for ways to proactively extend reach of content through earned media channels. This position is a key member of the EVPs senior leadership team and participates in department-wide 360 degree communication strategies.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    MEDIA RELATIONS

             Builds ongoing proactive PR campaigns to support key strategic clinical and research areas across the organization; consistently seeks out new opportunities

             Develops and implements strategies to secure highly visible media placements at the local, national and international level. Maintains and fosters relationships with media partners and journalists.

             Works with clinical and research chairs to develop and implement media campaigns/stories that highlight and promote NYU Langones reputation

             Arranges media training for key internal spokespersons to ensure preparation and accurate messaging

             Oversees the public relations on-call system, ensuring that there is a media professional available at all times

             Keeps abreast of developments within NYU Langone and medical schools

             Assigns staff to beats, assuring alignment with the chairs; oversees writing and editing of all press releases

             Ensures quick, accurate responses to media inquiries including serving as or identifying a suitable spokesperson and subject matter expert to respond to the media

             Develops and implements system for measuring and analyzing the scope and impact of the media relations programs

             Develop and manages communications plans for all new faculty group plan (FGPs) acquisitions

     

    LEADING PEOPLE

             Provides strategic leadership, mentorship, and influence to ensure the team, whether direct or indirect reports, are working in an integrated way to deliver high-impact work

             Provides development and talent management activities for their direct reports and their organizations, which may include forecasting resource needs, recruiting, hiring, managing escalations, performance management, training, and budgeting

             Directs the approach to how work gets done, sets priorities, ensures standards are understood and adhered to

             Creates and articulates a vision for the team to ensure they understand their role in the overall strategy of the institution

             Champions a strong continuous improvement culture and ensures deployment of scalable, simplified and standardized processes

             Perseveres through adversity, ambiguity and change, and proactively identifies solutions

             Provides overall day to day management, technical, financial direction in conjunction with department

             Manages PR agency of record and contractor relationships

     

    COLLABORATING AND INFLUENCING

             Collaborates with all other teams within the department to a) keep staff informed and engaged and b) extend reach of content to other external channels

             Proactively anticipates and alerts senior leadership to major issues that may affect the institution and recommends strategic solutions

             Partners with leaders in marketing, digital, creative, institutional and internal communications in the creation and implementation of comprehensive communication plans

             Builds strategic and collaborative relationships throughout NYU Langone Health

             Engages other stakeholders in strategic conversations and includes their thoughts and concerns in the planning process

             Identifies and acts on new opportunities

             Contributes to overall departmental strategies in collaboration with leadership

     

    FINANCIAL

             Responsible for PR/Media Relations chart string, including salaries

             Develops a budget and manages within expectations

    Negotiates SOW from vendors and agencies

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify you must have a 20 years or more of relevant experience in media relations and public relations. Healthcare, Pharmacology and Science experience preferred but not necessary. Bachelor's Degree required, Masters preferred Strong working knowledge of promoting clinical and research programs Excellent writer, editor and verbal communicator. Strong science writing experience. Established relationships with healthcare and science reporters in print, digital, and broadcast Track record of executing high profile public and media relations programs, both proactive and reactive Comfort level with digital content channels, including but not limited to social media Strong PPT or Keynote user for presentations; strong working knowledge of online collaboration tools Comfort level with analytics tools and executive reporting for departmental dashboards Experience managing PR agency Strength managing diverse teams and issues; experience leading, developing and mentoring large teams of professionals Well-versed in providing counsel, coaching and direct support to senior corporate and operational leadership regarding public relations strategies and working with the press Innovative leader of others, with the gravitas to influence collaboration and outcomes
