    Position Summary:
    We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Associate Director of Institutional & Issues Management Communications.

    In this role, the successful candidate will join the Media Relations team within the Communications & Marketing (C&M) department. The successful applicant will be responsible for developing proactive strategies for promoting and protecting the institutional reputation of NYU Langone as a top-ranked health system in the nation through earned media but also supporting coordinated amplification of messaging as appropriate through owned media channels. This person will also play a lead role in issues management, preparing for and coordinating institutional responses to the media with the Senior Director of Media Relations and members of the leadership team.

    Job Responsibilities:

    Reporting directly to and working closely with the Senior Director of Media Relations, this individual will play a key strategic role, helping lead a unit focused on institutional matters, ranging from legal affairs to finance to real estate, development and facilities. The individual in this position must have experience working closely with top leadership, able to work effectively on sometimes fast-moving, high stakes matters. This is also an exceptional opportunity to promote the world-class leadership, capitalizing on opportunities to promote focused but also broader institutional narratives that align with strategic priorities. An innate sense of when to act and when and how to elevate matters of importance is critical. The person in this role will lead issues management, developing strategies, messaging and seeking appropriate approvals. The ability to perform and complete work sometimes outside of regular business hours is essential. This position will partner closely with the legal department, in addition to other teams in C&M to proactively develop regulatory capabilities and protect NYULH’s brand.

    Specific Responsibilities Include:

    Strategy, Policies & Procedures

      * Lead the design of proactive strategies to build, protect, and enhance NYULH's brand and reputation.
      * Manage and effectively prioritize multiple tasks at once, including monitoring processes, tracking issues in the media and online, and making proactive recommendations.
      * Develop and implement comprehensive and effective issues management strategies.
      * Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders across institutional leadership and their teams, ensuring awareness and preparation for upcoming opportunities and issues and understanding their priorities.
      * Update a comprehensive issues management playbook and emergency communications plan to reinforce image and reputation with all stakeholders (e.g., patients, media, students, employees).
      * Act as an internal focal point as appropriate by coordinating communication efforts across different departments and stakeholders.
      * Develop and track KPIs and metrics to measure the effectiveness and impact of institutional media strategies.
      * Provide functional support and advice on issues management to executive and senior leaders in the organization.
      * Consider, share and contribute to owned media opportunities involving institutional events, priorities, accolades, and issues.
    

    Media Relations

      * Ensure timely and accurate responses to media inquiries related to issues, ensuring each is appropriately vetted and elevated, assigning those as appropriate and serving as or identifying a suitable spokesperson, as needed.
      * Identify and develop strong relationships with key members of the national and local media, including relevant trades.
      * Strong sense of how to pitch a story to media, anticipate follow up questions from reporters, and understand how institutional messages will be framed in media.
      * Facilitate media training, developing talking points and briefings as needed for leadership.
    

    Relationship Management & Capability Building

      * Inform, activate and update other teams in C&M during an emergency or breaking news situation, including activating social media monitoring and that Enterprise Communications has what they need to determine appropriate recommendations on leadership communications to internal audiences.
      * Effectively work with and help manage agency support, leveraging external resources as appropriate.
      * Develop deep relationships with leadership by acting as a trusted C&M subject matter advisor that strategically helps them shape their approach to issues through robust and targeted tactics.
      * Partner effectively with top leadership and reconcile differing perspectives and priorities, at times, in resolving and managing issues.
      * Supervise staff’s relationships with key leadership and own other relationships, such as with Legal Affairs, to ensure awareness of upcoming legal matters and advance preparation, working with the Senior Director on strategies and messaging.
      * Coordinate with colleagues within and outside of C&M, including public relations specialists, legal advisors, and other team members, to ensure consistent messaging.
    

    Continuous Improvement

      * Leverage enterprise data and research (e.g., corporate reputation tracking data and stakeholder insights) to inform future communication strategies, content creation, and engagement.
      * Conduct ongoing and annual assessments of communications effectiveness at the organizational level as it relates to brand reputation, awareness, and achieving communications goals.
      * Leverage learnings from past issues to continuously inform strategies and update the response playbook.
      * Closely track assignments, progress, and associated metrics for the team; share and update those on a master editorial calendar.
      * Champion a strong continuous improvement culture and ensure deployment of scalable, simplified, and standardized processes.
    

    People Management

    * Manage, support, and inspire a team to maximize communications opportunities.
    * Guide the team on how work gets done, set priorities, ensure standards are understood and adhered to.
    * Ensure clarity for the vision of the team to help them understand their role in the overall strategy of the institution.
    

    Minimum Qualifications:
    To qualify you must have a Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, or related field
    9 years+ of experience in media relations and crisis communications, specifically in an institutional or academic medical center setting
    3+ years of management experience leading effective teams
    Established track record of working closely with and effectively communicating with executive leadership
    Excellent understanding of media relations and the media landscape in the US
    Strong understanding and interest in social media platforms and their role in sharing information that is at times unreliable and how that proliferates
    Experience in issues management and communications and ability to react quickly and appropriately to media coverage
    Ability to make decisions quickly within high pressure situations
    Strong interpersonal skills for cross-functional collaboration and ability to build strong relationships both internally and externally
    Extensive media contacts and existing relationships, particularly in New York and health care
    Experience working in a complex organization with a range of leadership
    Knowledge and understanding of health care, higher education and current issues and trends

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Masters degree in communications, public relations, or related field
    Bilingualism is an asset (Spanish/English)

    NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $110,479.20 - $184,132.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
