POSITION SUMMARY:
The Manager for Data Center Operations will report to the Director of Technology Engineering, the Manager of Data Center Operations is responsible for assisting in setting strategy, implementing technologies, defining support and operationalizing best practices around our technology platforms. At NYU Langone Health, we leverage storage, compute, memory, virtualization, Unix, Windows, databases as well as both public and our own private cloud technology that cater to our clinical, administrative, education and research staff. The Data Center Manager will be the primary contact and is accountable for all data center services provided by their team for the New York, New Jersey & Illinois locations. This role will manage, directly perform or act as the liaison to the appropriate teams to deliver all critical facilities services; vendor management, mechanical, electrical, plumping (MEP) and fire-life-safety, physical security, Facilities Operations and Service Delivery logistics (shipping, receiving & storage), e-waste, media destruction and data center design.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Increase the effectiveness of NYU Langone Health platforms by building strategies and delivering value.
- Improve and establish processes and systems that boost the efficiency and overall performance of our data centers.
- Establish and oversee the application of standard practices, processes, procedures and workmanship standards to ensure the highest levels of quality, consistency, and interoperability among diverse facilities.
- Ensure data center operates at maximum efficiency, including: analyzing existing operating conditions, recommending new technologies, maintaining customer SLA requirements, and improving overall efficiency while maintaining budget expectations.
- Partner with all infrastructure teams on their data center related requirements and projected growth to assure space is available for future needs in the DC’s
- Act as technical liaison between business units, vendors, facilities, and partners
- Requirements definition and design for data room internals including rack layouts, structured cabling, pdu’s, etc
- Manage DC Operations technicians who are responsible for hardware/equipment installations, capacity management/forecasting, patch cabling, spare parts/consumables management, equipment decommissions, disposal cycles and tape management.
- Ensure DC Ops technicians meet requirements for incident resolution, break/fix repairs and requests are coordinated, escalated if required, and closed in a timely fashion.
- Oversee the data center operations incident, change, request ticket queues ensuring tickets are addressed and resolved in a timely manner
- Escalate major issues, business disruptions or incidents immediately and properly while continually updated senior management and affected groups
- Create and maintain DC Operations documentation which includes scope documents, SOPs, work instructions, RFPs, processes/procedures, etc
- Manage yearly budgets which covers consumables, test equipment, DC cleanings, capacity expansion items, etc.
- Partner with IT Leaders, strategic partners, peers and clients on Data center strategies and operations
- Manage and maintain effective relationships with vendors, equipment manufacturers, partners, and associates
- Deliver data center planning reports which provide power, cooling and space utilization metrics and future forecasts
- Manage annual service provider inventory of all major DC’s and report to management on growth requirements
- Maintain the onsite data center/computer room and offsite co-location installations to NYULH standards
- Ability to speak confidently and communicate clearly to executives ability to quickly learn new technologies while staying current on data center trends and technologies
- Lead Data Center planning initiatives to achieve business goals by prioritizing technology initiatives
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing tasks/deliverables according to plans, schedules, and expectations
- Develop, document, and maintain strategies for effective data center operations
- Participate and lead data center specific audits
- Manage and approve security access lists for associated data centers/computer rooms
- Drive cultural change and increase collaboration levels within the organization:
- Provide leadership across the function, while driving performance improvement, building technical capability and developing talent
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement that proactively manages resolution of serious and complex problems, identifying underlying causes and performing corrective action appropriately
- Lead and manage a team of FTE and outsourced Data Center operations technicians across various locations
REQUIREMENTS:
- S. degree in information systems, computer science or related field
- 10+ years of experience in the IT arena, with 5+ years of leadership experience
- Intimate knowledge of distributed systems technologies such as server, storage, desktop, enterprise monitoring tools architecture
- Health care experience a plus; understanding of the requirements of an integrated academic medical center
- 5 years data center support; knowledge & practical experience in data center infrastructure systems including power, cooling, fire suppression, physical security, cabling, infrastructure and IT equipment installation and environmental monitoring.
- Data Center Infrastructure Management tools, IT equipment installation, general application and system support.
- Must be willing to work on weekends and holidays when needed.
- Experience and financial responsibilities of with managing both operating and capital budges in excess of $1M
- Experience managing a team of 10+ staff
- Experience managing multiple projects and initiatives
- Effective speaker, collaborative worker and good writing skills
- Able to translate complex technical information and implications in business-oriented language
