    POSITION SUMMARY: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Tumor Registrar. In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the Impac Cancer Registry by abstracting all newly diagnosed cancer patients seen at the NYU Langone Medical Center. Coordinates and completes all tasks assigned under the Cancer Program standards of the NYU Medical Center, i.e. Tumor Registry, which may include weekly tumor conferences, Cancer Committee meetings, preparation for ACOS accreditation and surveys, maintenance of long-term patient follow-up, quarterly/annual reporting, reporting cancer data to NCDB upon request, weekly reports to the New York State Cancer Registry, responding to statistical requests, and coordinating all registry per diem work.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Performs case finding by identifying cases to be reviewed and/or abstracted from the monthly Aptium and NYU coded data uploads into Impac. Abstracts appropriate cases into Impac by extracting information from medical records including demographic characteristics, history of cancer, diagnostic procedures, disease stage, extent of illness and treatment. Codes topography, morphology and other information relative to applicable tumor patients. Organizes, inputs and maintains patient data in Impac registry to ensure compliance with NYU and state operational standards for a tumor registry.
    • Creates a daily pull list for charts. Prepares and disseminates tumor registry data. Prepares routine and special statistical reports upon request.. Provides data on registry patients for hospital planning and administration. Prepares charts and narrative reports for distribution to applicable hospital committees. Coordinates activities of tumor registry with those of the hospital cancer/ tumor committees in developing criteria for patient care evaluations.
    • Ensures the Cancer Center is current with the New York State Registry requirement of reporting newly diagnosed cancer cases within three to six months of the diagnosis. Submits completed cases; receives feedback and corrects any errors or warnings. Resubmits the corrected cases. Completes information accurately and neatly. Initiates follow-up as needed to expedite or track progress.
    • Responds to requests for Registry reports from the NYU Cancer Institute stakeholders and other customers. Responsible for supporting Commission on Cancer (COC) of the American College of Surgeons standards. Keeps a weekly productivity report.
    • Participates and performs other related duties.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify you must be a Certified Tumor Registrar with a minimum of an associates degree and 1 - 2 years experience in ICD-9-CM coding or an area directly related to the position. Experience with automated patient information systems and knowledge of the personal computer work environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of the Impac Registry and the New York State Tumor Registry abstraction system.
