    POSITION SUMMARY: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Pharmacist-Huntington. In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for chemotherapy and supportive therapy order verificationfor appropriateness, preparing and dispensing of these medications foradministration to patients by nurses.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Demonstrates proper techniqueand knowledge while preparingchemotherapy. Properly prepareschemotherapy and othercompounded sterile productsfollowing the established NYUguidelines. Understands andperforms sterile technique whenpreparing compounded sterileproducts. This includes thewashing of hands and arms withapproved germicidal soap, use ofpersonal protective equipment andgloves, sanitizing the hoods withalcohol, placement of an absorbentchemo pads on the workingsurface of the hood, placement ofall items needed for productpreparation in the hood and properuse of closed system transferdevices or negative pressuretechnique when drawing up chemoagents under sterile conditions.Understands and adheres tospecial procedures for preparationof intrathecal and intrapleuralpreparations.
    • Understands classifications of chemo agents such as vesicants and irritants; and there administration, preparation and labeling. Appropriately measures and mixes the correct ingredients checking calculations and expiration dates. Uses appropriate equipment. Checks medications for accuracy, physical characteristics and expiration date. Checks medications for accuracy, physical characteristics and expiration date. Has a second pharmacist or pharmacy technician independently check ingredients, calculations, expiration date and preparation process.
    • Demonstrates an understanding ofchemotherapy protocol. Followsand maintains calculation of eachchemo agent according to thedocumented literature in theprotocol using prescribedparameters such as body weight,body surface area, creatinineclearance, CBC, etc. Has theknowledge to recalculate drugdose and explain the dosemodification. Understands pretreatmentconsiderations involvedwith each protocol. This includesmaking sure all hydration; premedications,antiemetics, lab testsand assessment parameters aremet before dispensing thechemotherapy or supportivetherapy.
    • Contacts the prescriber forclarification of orders whendeviation in the protocol exists.Documents all interactions with allhealth care professionals in thepatients in the patient's pharmacyprofile chart as well as in theelectronic intervention reportingsystem. Understands and usesstandardized language whendescribing chemotherapy regimenswithin protocols. This includes anunderstanding of duration andrates of administration of chemoagents calculated from volume ofagent administered.
    • Provides drug information. Provides accurate information to health professionals. Checks necessary references before giving out information. Utilizes text literature and internet as sources of information.
    • Observes Aseptic technique andfollows NIOSH guidelines whilehanding and dispensing hazardousdrugs Uses proper attire andobserves hand hygiene policieswhen handling sterile productsFollows proper guidelines forworking in a biosafety cabinet andin a clean room environment.
    • Trains and monitors pharmacytechnicians, interns and pharmacystudents. Checks trainees work forcompletion, accuracy andprioritization. Explains procedurespecific to work environment.Gives suggestions to improvework. Demonstrates patience andattempts to strengthen the traineesperformance. Demonstratespatience and attempts tostrengthen the traineesperformance.
    • Assists with the security of thepharmacy. Makesrecommendations to Head nurse ornursing staff when appropriate.Uses badge access to enter theclinic and department. Reports anyunusual behavior to a pharmacymanager or appropriate authority.Follows department procedures forcontrolled drugs storage, handlingand dispensing. Understands andfollows Automated DispensingCabinet restocking procedures.
    • Follows NYU Langone Clinical Cancer Center policies and procedures and NYU State Boardof Pharmacy and Federal requirements for medication management. Understands thesecurity and dispensing requirements for all medications including controlled drugs.
    • Follows the NYU Langone Medical Center policy and procedures for the security anddistribution of NYU State official prescription blank (or paper).
    • Demonstrates an understanding of investigational drug procedures. Followsspecific clinical trial protocol instructions for dosage, preparation anddispensing. Follows treatment parameters and dose modifications as specifiedin the protocol.
    • Provision of Pharmacy services including order verification and dispensing toall Ambulatory Article 28 sites that are serviced by Cancer Center Pharmacies.
    • Checking and verification of all emergency boxes and hypersensitivity kitsbefore these are sealed and issued to patient care areas.
    • Performs other duties as assigned

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors Degree in Pharmacy. New York State Pharmacy License.Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Understanding ofchemotherapeutic agents and treatment regimens.. REQUIRED LICENSES: Pharmacist License-NYS

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Doctor of Pharmacy degree. ASHP Oncology accreditation. Two yearsor more experience as an oncology pharmacist in a hospital setting.
