    POSITION SUMMARY:

     

    We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a IACUC Specialist.

    Reporting to the IACUC Assistant Director, the IACUC Specialist assists Principal Investigators (PIs) and their research teams in drafting new protocols, amendments and renewals. This individual is also responsible for collaborating and coordinating with the IACUC to ensure compliance with all institutional policies and procedures as well as federal and state regulatory guidelines, policies and procedures pertaining to the use of animals in research

     

     

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    • Participates in special projects and performs other job related duties as required.
    • Establishes with the PI a suggested correction action plan to the IACUC for any post-approval monitoring findings and monitors the corrective action to ensure its completion by the correct date approved by the IACUC.
    • Coordinates and participates in inspections of animal care and use facilities and laboratories to assist the IACUC in providing oversight of all animal-related activities and to ensure compliance with federal regulations, nationally accepted standards and institutional policies.
    • Conduct for-cause and not-for-cause audit visits by interviewing and/or observing the PI and his/her research team with respect to IACUCapproved, active protocols.
    • Conducts post-approval monitoring activities by assessing PI or Research Team compliance with terms of approved animal research protocols
    • Clarifies protocol/amendment review comments from Designated Member reviews or from Full Committee reviews.
    • Carries forward questions and concerns arising from the PI or the research team, obtains adequate responses and discusses them with concerned parties.
    • Provides additional context for internal and external policy and procedure changes which may impact the PIs research
    • Provides regular updates to the PI and the research team on external regulatory developments and internal policy changes which may impact the PIs research.
    • Conducts the regulatory portion of the New Research orientation lecture in the absence of the Assistant Director.
    • Informs all interested parties of the available training options and requirements within the NYU School of Medicine Animal Care and Use Program and helps arrange for such training as appropriate as training needs are identified through protocol development or other interactions with the PI and research team. In these cases, the IACUC specialist may attend the training session to both self-educate and ensure the PIs understanding of expectations.
    • Answers questions from the PI and his/her research team that arise in day-to-day work that relate to animal research. Responds to customer inquiries by first verifying understanding of the inquiry, then assists the customer in retrieving an answer to the inquiry (either through providing it directly or connecting the customer to the appropriate resource within the animal care and use program) and finally confirming the customers understanding of the answer.
    • Works with the principal investigator to self-report unanticipated adverse events or events of noncompliance to the IACUC as appropriate.
    • Provides clarification to the PI on any modifications requested during the Designated Member or Full Committee Review of the IACUC.
    • Serves as a resource to the PI in discussing the animal research protocol with a Designated Member Reviewer of the IACUC or in preparing the submission for Full Committee Review.
    • Assists principal investigators and research teams with annual renewals, 3-year renewals and amendments. If an amendment is needed, the IACUC specialist will collaborate with the principal investigator for prompt submission to the IACUC.
    • Functions as the primary administrative source of contact for assigned PIs and their research teams throughout the life cycle of the animal research protocol.
    • This pre-review will identify and fill: administrative gaps to ensure all relevant sections and fields of a submission are complete and free from typos; protocol complies with all regulations and policies; protocol is written artfully to minimize future amendments, etc; substantive gaps such as lack of clarity for scientific justifications; proper identification of humane end points; consistent animal numbers are eliminated in the protocol before it continues through the review process and all core training requirements have been met
    • Engages in both an administrative and substantive pre-review of the protocol before it is routed to other reviewers and eventually to the IACUC for review. The administrative review includes such tasks as guidance in routing the protocol to the appropriate resources for grant congruency review and/or hazardous materials review as appropriate.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    To qualify you must have a Bachelors degree in related research/science field, or equivalent experience (5-7 years IACUC administrative or animal research regulatory compliance experience). The ideal candidate with have an understanding of various animal models, including research animal use manipulations. The individual will also have the capacity to work collaboratively with a variety of personnel (from various backgrounds) in the animal care and use program. Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent organization, time management and problem solving skills. The ability to prioritize and work with minimal supervisions within a strong team environment is essential as is demonstrating a zeal for customer service. Must be able to maintain objectivity in each aspect of the role while still maintain a customer-oriented focus.

     

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    Knowledgeable about animal welfare laws, regulations, IACUC administrative processes and those with IACUC administrative experience. In addition, it is preferred that the individual be skilled in writing detailed, clear, precise and grammatically correct technical letters, memos and reports. AALAS certification at the LAT or LATg level and or CPIA certification also preferred.
