    POSITION SUMMARY: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Perfusionist - PD. In this role, the successful candidate operates cardiac perfusion and blood saving equipment during cardio thoracic and vascular surgery. Maintains vital body functions within established normal ranges.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Performs pre-operative preparation and set up of heart lung machine. Consults with cardiac surgeons and anesthesiologists on each patient for specific instructions, and reviews patient's chart for pertinent information. Assembles equipment in an aseptic manner and primes system according to standard procedures.
    • Calculates blood volume dilution, flow rates, drug dosages and selects disposable equipment based on the patients age, height, weight and type of surgical procedure. Ensures sterility of equipment.
    • Performs all intraoperative functions associated with heart-lung machine. Monitors operation of heart-lung, heater/cooler, blood flow measuring, cell saving machines and cardioplegic system. Administers drugs and other anesthetic agents as requested by physicians. Interprets and corrects laboratory blood gases, electrolytes and activated clotting time results.
    • Records pertinent patient data (pressures, lab results, temperatures, times of different activities, drugs, fluids and blood and blood products added) before, during and after cardiopulmonary bypass. Keeps surgeon informed of flow rate, perfusion pressure, urine output, temperature of blood, patient and heart. Notifies surgeon of any changes in the above and notifies surgeon periodically during the perfusion of the patient's status.     • Controls and maintains blood volumes, blood and gas flow rates; blood, esophageal, bladder, pharyngeal and rectal temperatures; arterial line, cardioplegia line, aortic and venous pressures, and monitors urinary output.
    • Performs daily inventory and equipment maintenance. Informs supervisors of equipment needs daily and orders supplies, as needed.
    • Performs other duties as assigned

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify, you must possess the following:

    Bachelors Degree in Perfusion Technology OR Degree from an Accredited Cardiovascular Perfusion Education program, required.

    Current and valid NYS Perfusionist license OR current and valid NYS Perfusionist permit, required.

    Certification as a Perfusionist or eligibility by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP), required (NEW GRADUATES MUST BECOME CERTIFIED WITHIN TWO YEARS OF HIRE DATE)

    Excellent communication (both oral and written), ability to work collaboratively as a member of the surgical team and basic computer skills, required.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Prior experience as a Perfusionist, preferred.
