  • Responsibilities

    Description: The Security Guard is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of all zoo staff, guests, vendors and property. Depending on the assigned post the officer will either patrol the zoo property or provide stationary security presence. While on duty the Security Guard will address any Vendor, Guest and/or Staff safety or security concerns that may emerge. In addition to scheduled shifts officer may be required to work special events after normal zoo operating hours. Security guards will be required to work weekends, holidays and during inclement weather.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Responsible for performing park wide security patrols throughout assigned shift.

    Responsible for identifying any incidents and reporting them to direct supervisor.

    Responsible for responding to medical calls and assisting zoo EMS staff as needed

    Responsible for monitoring weather conditions and communicating status to zoo staff and guests when action is required.

    Responsible for ensuring that the zoo’s Security Systems are in working order.

    Responsible for coordinating staff efforts in efficiently parking guests when they arrive and assisting them when exiting.

    Responsible for maintaining a daily log and preparation of incident reports for any occurrences during the shift.

    Perform all other duties as assigned.

    Skills:

    Ability to work with little or no supervision.

    Ability to interact professionally with both staff and visitors.

    Ability to respond to guest disturbances in a fashion that minimizes any negative affect to the zoo and our other guests.

    Ability to prepare accurate written daily incident reports and logs at end of each shift.

    Ability to effectively orally communicate emergency situations and initiate response to all staff and our guests when required.

    Physical Requirements:

    Must be able to work outside year round in inclement weather conditions such as extreme high/low temperatures, snow and rain conditions. Must be able to work on his or her feet for extended periods of time and the ability to bend, stoop, extend oneself etc., that is required to perform assigned tasks. Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.

    Training: Must be willing to participate in zoo sponsored training that may include medical response training, use of force training, and use of less-lethal devices including exposure to such devices.

    Education:

    Minimum High School diploma or GED equivalent required. Must have a valid driver’s license. Must have a minimum one year experience working in the Security field. Must have a minimum of two years’ experience working directly with the public.
