    POSITION EMPHASIS: The position supports NEA’s strategic objective to focus the energy and resources of its 3 million members toward the promotion of public education by assisting in the development of the Association’s communication strategy and positioning to support the mission and business objectives of NEA and its affiliates. The primary focus of this position will be to serve as a lead strategist in the planning, development, and execution of the 2020 presidential campaign on electoral and issue advocacy campaigns aligned to NEA’s strategic objective for the Campaigns & Elections department.  

     

    POSITION SUMMARY: The essential functions of this position include coordinating, leveraging and planning comprehensive communication strategies, as well as developing cross-channel communications programs that engage members, supporters, and the general public to build the NEA brand and mobilize in support of key electoral priorities. The incumbent will provide cohesive and strategic communications counsel as a critical part of multiple campaigns; define and create creative concepts and translate them into succinct and effective copy for editorial, email, web content, and more; oversee and contribute to the production, delivery, and QA of major email programs, social media content, and web pages; and support internal communications for electoral work, to include drafting of memos for NEA leadership, regularly updating national, state and local elected leaders and creating resources for state and local affiliates.

     

    IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA), THE FOLLOWING IS PROVIDED: The position involves skill in using a personal computer; oral and written communication skills; skills in proofreading and editing; use of clear and articulate speech; interpersonal relations skills; reasoning and problem solving skills; ability to work in a fast-paced environment; ability to sit for long periods, stoop, bend, reach and carry light materials (up to 10 lbs.); and ability to travel by various methods of transportation, e.g., airplane, car.

    Required Skills

     

    MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Political Science, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills may be acquired. Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Five years of professional experience in communications, journalism, political or digital organizing. Experience in building effective electoral communications campaigns. Experience on political campaigns or with an agency handling political clients, coalitions, and staffing to elected officers and other senior-level principals. Proven mastery communications and experience in the development of communication plans and evaluation techniques. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Excellent oral and writing skills. Must be able to work extended hours on evenings and weekends. Samples of work products may be required at time of interview. Frequent travel required.

    Required Experience

     

    SELECTION CRITERIA: TIER 1 (ESSENTIAL): Demonstrated in-depth professional knowledge and experience in strategic and organizational communications, electoral campaigns or a communications/public relations agency. Demonstrated experience in building effective communications campaigns, specifically with electoral and/or issue advocacy efforts. Demonstrated understanding of how to build short-, mid-, and long-term content campaigns to accomplish organizing and advocacy goals. Experience must include online content strategy, implementation, assessment, and project management. Demonstrated flexibility and effectiveness in handling multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions. Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment or independently, as appropriate. Successful references. TIER 2 (SIGNIFICANT): Professional knowledge of and experience with multiple facets of digital media. Clear understanding of how print and electronic communications can be coordinated to support media relations, marketing, advertising, development and advocacy. Excellent verbal communication and writing skills. TIER 3 (DESIRABLE): Proven record of ongoing communications professional development and training. Knowledge of NEA’s vision, mission, and strategic goals.
