    SALARY: $15 an hour

     

    NEA is seeking individuals interested in participating in the NEA Winter/Spring 2020 internship session, which will begin on January 14, 2020 and will end on or before May 29, 2020. Interns who receive a stipend may intern up to a maximum of twenty (20) hours a week.

     

    The NEA Internship Program provides interns with training, learning opportunities, and educational experiences through a variety of rich and substantive programmatic experiences that support quality public education. These experiences may include conducting research; data analysis; writing, editing, using Internet applications and social media; participating in and assisting with meetings and policy forums; visits to Capitol Hill; and other appropriate program-related activities. The internships range from six weeks to a full semester.

     

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The NEA partners with institutions of higher education and other organizations to identify interns - generally juniors, seniors, recent college graduates (up to 18 months) or graduate students - who are interested in public education policy and education issues. Students pursuing degrees in Political Science, Government, Public Policy, Education and related disciplines are encouraged to apply.

     

    POSITION EMPHASIS: This position supports NEA’s strategic objective to focus the energy and resources of its 3 million members toward the promotion of public education by participating in internship opportunities in the Center for Advocacy.

     

    DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED INTERN ASSIGNMENT(S): 

    As part of the learning experience, intern will do research, data collection and analysis, writing, and attend meetings related to educator salaries/compensation, collective bargaining, and health and pension benefits; and learn about NEA’s federal advocacy and lobbying Congress.

     

    Interns will work with staff on projects that assist NEA members, governance, and affiliate staff, on federal legislative activities impacting educators and public education priorities. Work collaboratively with staff to assist in advancing NEA’s federal legislative agenda. Assignments will vary, and may include, but are not limited to member engagement and social media work, Election 2020, census projects, and research on federal legislative topics.

     

    Interns will have the opportunity to track legislation, cover Congressional hearings, attend coalition meetings and participate in partnership events and Capitol Hill visits and activities.

     

    EXPECTED SKILLS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEVELOPMENT THAT THE INTERN MAY OBTAIN FROM THIS EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE. 

    Interns will have the opportunity to obtain collective bargaining knowledge, legislative knowledge, and knowledge and understanding of campaign strategies at state and national levels.
