    Job Description

    The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) focuses on designing, building, launching, and maintaining America’s intelligence satellites.  Whether creating the latest innovations in satellite technology, contracting with the most cost-efficient industrial supplier, conducting rigorous launch schedules, or providing the highest-quality products to our customers, we never lose focus on who we are working to protect our Nation and its Citizens. 

    The NRO is looking for candidates for the Summer 2022 NRO Cadre Undergraduate and Graduate Student Internship Program (GG-5 to GG-7) to support our each of our Career Fields – Financial Management, Contracts, Security, Technical, and Mission Support.

    The NRO Cadre Undergraduate and Graduate Student Internship Program provides students pursuing advanced education with paid opportunities to work at NRO and explore career paths related to their academic field of study or career interests. Interns will receive training and guidance to prepare them to support NRO projects and initiatives.

    Summer interns are full-time employees on a temporary appointment for the period of 10-weeks – June through August. There may be opportunities to work over winter break and to return during subsequent summers based on mission requirements, continued eligibility, and student's availability.

    These opportunities are highly competitive. Those applying to NRO student opportunities must:

    • Be a U.S. citizen (Interns may NOT hold dual citizenship);

    • Be suitable for Federal employment, determined by a background investigation;

    • Be able to obtain and hold a TS/SCI security clearance;

    • Have favorable results on a pre-employment drug testing;

    • Be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited university. Undergraduates must have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours;

    • Provide an unofficial transcript at the time of application and official transcript upon acceptance into the program from the academic institution reflecting a minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0

    • Be available for an interview and other applicable processing; and

    • Be available for the 10-week summer program.

    The NRO Cadre Intern program offers various benefits to students including:

    Internship (GG-5 to GG-7) 2021 Salary for Washington DC Area:  

    GG-05 - $39,684 per year or $19.01 per hour GG-07 - $49,157 per year or $23.55 per hour

    These positions are a Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System (DCIPS) position in the Excepted Service under 10 USC 1601. 

    Applicants are required to provide a resume reflecting applicable experience that demonstrates the possession of the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for immediate success in the position.

    • Cover Letter cannot exceed 5,000 characters

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT WORKING FOR NRO CADRE

    Basic Eligibility for a position with NRO:

    • U.S. Citizenship is required

    • You must be able to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance

    • You will be subject to pre-employment and periodic drug testing

    • You will be subject to pre-employment and periodic polygraph examinations

    Hiring Incentives

    The NRO may offer hiring incentives and other entitlements at management’s discretion.

    Trial Period

    All new DCIPS employees will be required to serve a 2-year trial period.
