    Job Description

    POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting of all Lucent 5ESS software and hardware for multiple Lucent Technologies 5ESS and End Office Switches in a Voice Network Operations Center environment. Candidate will provide expert switch software and hardware knowledge and troubleshooting experience for the Lucent 5ESS switching platform. The work entails proficiency with both ILEC and CLEC switching systems and remote switching platforms.

    LOCATION: Remote, virtual office

    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES TO INCLUDE:

    • The primary responsibility of the VNOC Engineer is to provide tier 3 support for Lucent 5ESS switching hardware or software. Provides escalation support to NA I and NA II for issues that are not resolved through documented procedures so that network monitoring and responses can be effectively managed by NA I and NA II
    • Identify patterns of repetitive failures on a Central Office (CO) or network level and execute permanent fixes to improve the organization’s overall efficiency
    • Perform remote preventative maintenance and “proactive” procedures to reduce the probability of outages and decrease the number of alarms received in Netcool
    • Recognizes and correctly responds to failures in billing infrastructure (including documenting fixes so that all analysts have access to an increasingly comprehensive library of fixes)
    • Responsible for changes to Lucent 5ESS platforms including hardware, software, inter-connecting transport facilities and associated ancillary devices.
    • Provides on-call support as scheduled by VNOC management
    • Administer functions in the solution that require restricted access for security, such as CALEA
    • Provides guidance and training to Network Analysts technicians.
    • Provides expert-level knowledge of the solution’s hardware from a network, system, subsystem, card, interconnect, and port level
    • Network trouble isolation, problem solving, network activation, network design, vendor management, and planning of hardware/software upgrades and conversions to maintain and modernize the existing production voice network
    • Demonstrate expert-level knowledge of the messaging protocols, signaling protocols and compression codecs used in the solution
    • Implement and manage new and existing Class 4, Class 5, and soft switch voice networks
    • Other duties as assigned by VNOC management

    JOB REQUIREMENTS Candidate must have engineering or technical degree, or at least 10 years Lucent 5ESS equivalent job experience. Specific experience, education and training may be considered in lieu of degree.

    • Strong Project Management and Communication skills with the ability to work closely with Team members.
    • 5E Tier 3 hardware and software technical support
    • ASM knowledge and ODBE experience.
    • SS7 & STP call flows
    • Voice Performance Surveillance
    • Class 4/5 Translations
    • Long Distance Network Routing and Trunking
    • Resolving 5E database splits using ODBE: 5 years (Preferred)
    • 5E peripheral degrowth including multi-RSM site and ORM: 5 years (Preferred)
    • Technical support experience with the ASM subsystem: 5 years (Preferred)
    • Willing to work rotating on-call support.
    • Must be self-motivated and have ability to complete tasks with little supervision.
    • Working knowledge of UNIX/Linux based hardware, operating systems, and applications

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • Proficient in the use of Windows-based computers. Able to use IE, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint without guidance or supervision
    • Expert level command of the solution’s hardware architecture at all release levels owned by Windstream
    • Proficient with the solution’s data structure, hardware inventory tables, translations, and commonly troublesome features
    • Proficient with the solution’s vendor documentation, including interconnect schematics, maintenance and troubleshooting procedures, office drawings, engineering and provisioning rules, and significant bulletins
    • Proficient with all vendor-provided interfaces such as Graphical User Interfaces (GUI), Command Line Interfaces (CLI), debugging tools, and non-menu applications and utilities
    • Familiar with all protocols used in the solution
    • Demonstrates a history of positive customer interactions, successful mentoring relationships, and formal or informal classes taught
    • Demonstrates a history of leadership and initiating actions that contribute to the success of individual teammates and the team in general
    • Additional experience with the DMS-10, DMS-100/200, DMS-500, DCO, GTD-5 a plus.
