    Job Title: Language Engagement Specialist

    Hiring Authority: New American Association of Massachusetts

    Classification: Full Time (30 hours a week)

    Location: Lynn City Hall: 30 hrs in-person on-site

    Compensation Rate: $25 per hour

    Benefits:

    Ability to opt into 401K; overtime available, can take up to 21 days off a year (unpaid) & can make up 14 of those days, nationally recognized holidays will be paid.

    Background:

    In collaboration with the City of Lynn, the New American Association of Massachusetts (NAAM) provides language assistance to individuals who speak languages other than English and/or other communication needs, at no cost to them, to facilitate timely access to important city services and other agencies. NAAM is recruiting a Spanish Language Engagement Specialist who can perform their duties by building connections and trust with Lynn residents. This individual will report to Lynn City Hall and be supervised by their Language Access Coordinator.

    Job Summary:

    Ensure language access for the residents of Lynn, remove language and cultural barriers and other challenges to accessing city services, share information about city services and opportunities for citizen engagement, build connections and trust with community members, and engage community members in civic dialogues and public discussions.

    Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Offer in-person and phone interpretation to residents;

    • Translate city-based documents as well as other community materials;

    • Answer calls and direct residents to appropriate services;

    • Correspond to resident emails;

    • Use a data collection system to quantify resident outreach;

    • Facilitate civic participation in the community member’s preferred language;

    • Offer support and interpreting services at community events and gatherings organized by Lynn City Hall;

    • Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all clients and residents.

    Qualifications:

    ● High School Diploma or equivalent;

    ● Native speaker of the Spanish language with full command of standard usage and style (verbal and written skills);

    ● English fluency required, with full command of standard usage and style verbal and written skills);

    ● Ability to interpret back and forth from English to Spanish without difficulty;

    ● Willingness to be flexible and adaptable;

    ● Ability to translate documents

    ● Excellent customer service skills

    Preferred Qualifications:

    ● Experience being a translator/interpreter;

    ● Some knowledge of community and social services offered in Lynn;

    ● Experience handling sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality;

    ● At least one year of Lynn residency;

    Schedule

    ● Must be able to have a flexible schedule as evening responsibilities are required on top of your regular work schedule.

    ● Must be able to have a consistent work schedule week to week.

    Training

    Must be able to complete the interpreter training course within 6 months of being hired, this is an evening course that will be paid and completed as overtime.
