POSITION SUMMARY: The Office of School Support Services (OSSS) oversees food service delivery, pupil transportation services, and the competitive high school interscholastic sports programs of the Department of Education (DOE). The Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) provides opportunities for educating students in physical fitness, character development, and socialization skills through an athletic program that fosters teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. With an annual budget of $26.0M+, over the course of a school year more than 50,000 students in over 2,900 sports teams compete in one or more of 46 Public School Athletic League sports. The PSAL also manages The Big Apple Games, a summer recreational program that provides NYC students with opportunities for sport-specific fundamental development.
The Sports Coordinator will establish a structure for new and existing PSAL sports in line with current PSAL policies. S/he will also spearhead the establishment of the citywide PSAL Disabilities League and oversee the day-to-day operations of respective sports, effectively managing relationships with PSAL coaches and athletic directors. Performs related work.
REPORTS TO: Director of Sports Programming
DIRECT REPORTS: Site Supervisors and Event Staff
KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Works closely with the Director of Sports Programming, PSAL leadership team, and PSAL Sports Coordinators.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Construct and manage the implementation of tactical plans developed to mobilize the establishment of the citywide PSAL Disabilities League.
- Train, supervise, and regularly communicate with sports commissioners and supervisors; ensure that all DOE/PSAL rules, guidelines, and procedures are followed by school-based staff and student-athletes. In addition, conduct end of season commissioner review meetings.
- Determine trends for new sports initiatives and the success rate for new and existing sports; evaluate school-based athletic programs and new team requests to provide feedback and recommendations to the Director of Sports Programming.
- Support an integrated set of complementary evidence based activities to bring about recommendations for policy, environment, program, and infrastructure changes, to support the mission of the of PSAL and NYC Department of Education initiatives.
- Establish parameters and secure venues for existing PSAL sports seasons and competitions (start to end dates, competition dates, post-season dates, championship dates); plan and execute regular season, post-season, and special event operations for multiple citywide sporting events year-round.
- Strategically plan, manage, and provide support in the execution of trainings, professional sports-specific development clinics, and orientation workshops for Athletic Directors and coaches; assemble and lead various professional development sessions for official’s assignors, commissioners, coach’s advisory board, and playoff seeding committees.
- Ensure that all communication with internal and external stakeholders, including coaches, athletic directors, sports commissioners, supervisors, and principals, is clear, consistent, and reflective of the mission and corporate identity of both the New York City Department of Education and PSAL; manage all event communication.
- Develop and maintain relationships with area college athletic directors, media representatives, and community-based organization and local businesses, as part of a comprehensive plan to grow PSAL’s brand community; create sports-specific highlight articles for various events to post on www.PSAL.org.
- Perform analyses of all sporting event records in order to determine PSAL Wingate award winners.
- Recommend standardized strategies for the analysis of records and determination of winners in select PSAL sports; train personnel to accurately determine sporting event winners citywide.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
- High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

- Thorough knowledge and experience with running sporting activities and coaching athletics.
- Experience in a District 75 school or with Adaptive Physical Education.
- Knowledge of high school interscholastic sports and rules and regulations associated with these sports.
- Proficient in Internet communication and Microsoft applications.
- Satisfactory rating in currently teaching position for the past three years.
- Excellent record of attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Experience with educational sports programs.
- Ability to prepare written reports and make presentations clearly and concisely.
- Knowledge of the NYC public school system.
- Internal candidates preferred.
SALARY: $52,389+
(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not make less than their current salary.)
