    POSITION SUMMARY: The New York City Department of Education (DOE) is dedicated to creating and supporting partnerships among schools, families, and the community.

     

    The Field Language Access Coordinator in each Field Support Center, in collaboration with the Translation and Interpretation Unit, will support schools in developing a comprehensive approach for communicating and engaging with limited-English proficient families, by offering language access training and feedback on the current practices of schools. As the first point of contact for schools on language access issues, the Field Language Access Coordinator plays a key role in helping schools create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all families, a key vision of the Framework for Great Schools. Performs related work.

     

    REPORTS TO: Field Support Center Executive Director

     

    DIRECT REPORTS: N/A

     

    KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Office of Central Field Support, Translation and Interpretation Unit, school-based Language Access Coordinators, Field Support Centers, Superintendents, and Family Support Coordinators.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    • Determine whether schools in the district are exceeding or meeting expectations in delivering quality translation and interpretation services consistent with Chancellor’s Regulation A-663, or whether schools will need regular monitoring and support to increase their proficiency.
    • Gather, organize, analyze and report on multiple data sources, including schools’ Translation and Interpretation plans, to monitor and track schools’ progress with providing comprehensive language access services to families.
    • Develop reports and presentations on schools’ practices as they relate to language access, including quantity and quality of services provided and the overall approach to engaging limited-English-proficient families, for internal and external stakeholders.
    • Participate in Translation and Interpretation Unit Staff professional development and trainings. Provide Turnkey training to schools and school-based Language Access Coordinators as required and needed.
    • Serve as an expert in responding to language access-related questions from other DOE offices.
    • Deliver troubleshooting support to schools as needed.
    • Provide extra support in the form of language access evaluation visits to schools when deemed necessary.
    • Identify schools that can share best practices on integrating immigrant families into the school community.
    • Report back to Field Support Center Executive Director, the Translation and Interpretation Unit, and respective Superintendent regarding schools’ proficiency on translation and interpretation and language access.
    • Partner with Superintendent’s Offices in addressing the office’s unresolved family concerns regarding translation and interpretation at the school level. Partnership may include the collection of quantitative and qualitative data at the school level and appropriate follow-up school training and monitoring.
    • Partner with the Superintendent’s office in implementing escalation protocol for schools that have not made adequate progress in delivering quality language access services after receiving support.
    • Partner with FSC Student Services in support of schools, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all families.
    • Build trust with community by liaising with community-based organizations to identify any language access issues families may be experiencing that schools may not be aware of. When appropriate enlist community-based organizations for support in addressing identified gaps.

     

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

     

    MINIMUM

     

    1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
    2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
    3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

     

    PREFERRED

     

    • Familiarity with the New York City public school system.
    • Creative problem-solver, with the ability to perform critical analysis around important issues.
    • Excellent writing and communication skills, with a strong comfort level in analyzing and presenting data to executive management.
    • Ability to deliver dynamic and informative presentations and training to large audiences, including experienced educators and other school staff.
    • Strong attention to detail, extremely well-organized, and able to work under deadlines.
    • Experience working with communities and families on issues in education or a related field.
    • Experience in advocacy, complaint resolution, and customer service.
    • Strong skills in Microsoft Office programs, e.g., Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
    • Bilingual in any language.
    • Experience in a combination of education, government or social service program planning/evaluation.
    • Internal candidates preferred.

     

    SALARY: $52,389+

    (Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not make less than their current salary.)
