    Duration: One Year (July 2017- June 2018)

    The Division of Medical Ethics has in-patient clinical, educational and research activities at North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Cohen's Children's Medical Center and Zucker Hillside Hospital. Medical Ethics helps address professional norms, values and the principles, rules and codes utilized as standards for patient-centered medical care. The Medical Ethics service provides consultation to neonatal, pediatric and adult populations. The purpose is to increase transparency and improve communication between clinicians, patients and families regarding complex medical ethical issues of treatment.

    Clinical activities

    * Interdisciplinary Medical Ethics Consultation in the hospital's critical care and medical-surgical units

    * Active interdisciplinary collaboration and clinical case discussion

    * Monthly Ethics Committee meeting case presentations

    Education and Research

    * Fellowship program in Medical Ethics

    * Participate in the clinical and didactic education of professionalism and communication in the Hofstra- Northwell School of Medicine.

    * Provide system wide didactic interdisciplinary Grand Rounds in Ethics

    * Advocacy for autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice to improve medical and psychosocial needs of patients and surrogates

    * Multidisciplinary education in advanced Certificate in Clinical Bioethics Course at Hofstra University Bioethics Center

    * Promotion of research activities involving ethical analysis and care of patients with complex advanced illness and syndromes

    Description: The program is for those seeking clinical experience in Medical Ethics. The Fellowship entails supervised clinical responsibilities for Ethics Consults at North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Cohen's Children's Medical Center and Zucker Hillside Hospital. Academic work will include completion of a the bioethics certificate course course or fulfilling requirements for a Masters in Bioethics. A scholarly effort is expected in the performance of a research project. Additional responsibilities include preparation for Ethics Committee Meetings, conference meetings and conference presentations at various departments at the mentioned institutions and at Hofstra University- Northwell School of Medicine.

    Stipend: Available with Benefits

    1. Master Degree from accredited program in medicine, allied health, nursing, social work, chaplaincy, psychology or law.

    2. At least one year of direct clinical experience with hospital patients (preferably 3 years).

    3. Demonstrated skills in:

    a. Communication,

    b. Collaborative care,

    c. Problem resolution,

    d. Effective time management, and

    e. Continuous self-education
