    JOB TITLE:  Associate Director, Wellness Education and Prevention Services 

      

    REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Wellness and Assessment 

     

    CAMPUS:  Queens 

     

    JOB SUMMARY:  

    The Department of Student Wellness services the needs of the entire student body of St. John's University.  The student body we serve is one of the most diverse in the country, this provides for a rich experience to students and staff.  The Department of Student Wellness is composed of a multidisciplinary team of professionals including psychologists, social workers, nurses, and consulting psychiatrists. The team is seeking qualified candidates for a Associate Director of Wellness Education and Prevention Services. The program focuses on evidence based programming in the areas of: alcohol and drug education and prevention; mental health education and awareness; sexual assault and violence prevention, and stress management, and nutrition wellness programming.  This position reports to the Executive Director for Student Wellness within the Division of Student Affairs. 

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

    • Provide strong and effective leadership in the development and implementation of universal, indicated and selected programs and interventions that address holistic student wellness. 
    • Develop and oversee yearly Key Wellness Initiatives including our Wellness Fair, Suicide Prevention Awareness Event, Student Athlete Wellness Fair, DeStress Fests, Spring Health Fair. 
    • Work with other Wellness Departments to ensure an overall wellness programming framework, i.e., suicide prevention, violence prevention, mental health initiatives, orientation 
    • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of services, educational programs, initiatives and interventions 
    • Work with institution’s Office of Student Engagement, Orientation, Freshmen Center, Student Health Services, Center for Counseling and Consultation. Office of Residential Life, Office of Multi Cultural Affairs and academic departments to assess and provide essential programming to students 
    • Work with other institutions of higher education within the NYC area developing trainings and meetings that reflect the needs of the institutions. 
    • Participate in writing Federal and State grants to obtain alternate sources of funding for substance abuse and suicide prevention programming  
    • Ensure grant funding goals and outcomes are met in a timely manner . 
    • Develop and provide trainings for Graduate Assistants in facilitating our BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening Intervention for College Students). 
    • Develop and oversee onboarding trainings for The Department of Student Wellness Graduate Assistants. 
    • Recruit and manage our team of 10-15 Wellness Peer Educators 
    • Oversee and supervise 6 Student Wellness Graduate Assistants  
    • Assist in the overall development and management of the St. John’s COVID 19 Illness Investigation Team. 
    • Provide Contact Tracing training for the St. John’s Illness Investigation Team 
    • Provide assistance and support to students and family members with questions regarding COVID isolation, quarantine, vaccination, and other wellness concerns 
    • Create and Manage Social Media posts on Instagram, GroupMe, and YouTube  
    • Serve on University committees as needed 
    • Manage funding sources and supports as needed; i.e., check requisitions, ECPF’s, etc.

      

     

    COMPETENCIES 

    • Demonstrated competency with harm reduction, multisystemic interventions, and motivational interviewing. 

    • Knowledge of research and best practices a must. 

    • Excellent presentation skills, written skills and interpersonal skills.  

    • Grant writing and grant management skills. 

    • Demonstrate knowledge, sensitivity, and ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.

     

     

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY 

    This position supports the Executive Director with supervision of peer mentors and graduate assistants. 

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT 

    This position operates in a professional office environment and the incumbent is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; to carry work; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; communicate. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 10 lbs. 

     

    POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK 

    This position is full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and may require evening and weekend hours. Travel is primarily local and may include visits to the other NY campuses. 

     

    REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  

    • Master’s degree in Counseling, Alcohol and Other Drug intervention, Public Health, Health Education, Substance Abuse Counseling, Social Work, or related field.   
    • A strong background in evidence based education and prevention programming in the areas of alcohol and other drug education; sexual assault and violence prevention; and college student mental health.  
    • Three or more years experience working in AOD prevention, wellness, or health promotion programs preferably in a college/university setting.

    In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $75,000 - $85,000_.  St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. _  

     

     

    This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time
