    POSITION OVERVIEW:  This position will be responsible for prioritizing, planning, and implementing process improvement initiatives for a fast-paced, new, and growing structural extruded polypropylene foam business. We are seeking a versatile and action-driven process engineer to boost process efficiency for production lines within Herc LLC's Gert Noel Innovation Center (GNIC). As Herc LLC expands in size and scale, the process engineer will be critical for implementing formal documentation and training systems to ensure operators are properly equipped to meet company initiatives. 

    KPIS: 

    The primary KPI for this role is Overall Equipment Effectiveness.  Within OEE, the first focus area will be Quality as measure by Material Yield % (Finished Pounds / Pounds Consumed).  

    EXAMPLE DUTIES INCLUDE: 

    • Drive process improvements and optimization (raw material input to packaged goods output) for production lines within Herc LLC's GNIC facility. 

    • Use fundamental process engineering principles (mass balances, process design) to guide process improvement pathways with a heavy emphasis on boosting yields, reducing operational expenses, and driving sustainably higher processing margins. 

    • Document and perform procedural / technical training for line managers and team associates. Establish lean manufacturing values within team associates / line managers and ensure they have the fundamental technical skills necessary to operate lines at maximum efficiency. 

    • Develop close working relationships with Line Managers to ensure process improvement pathways are sustainably implemented across production lines.   

    • Build process control charts across applicable unit operations and use these findings to prioritize development pathways. 

    • Work closely with maintenance team and Reliability Engineer to document root-cause analysis and preventative action plans to maintain process control / material yield. Define and add maintenance requirements as they become known to impact process control through designated change management procedures. 

    • Ensure operation of group in conformance with Herc LLC and industry EH&S best practices. 

    • Assist line managers in day-to-day prioritization while also driving cross functional project management alignment.

     

    EXPERIENCE: 

    Candidates are required to have the following: 

    • Hold a degree in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, or like fields, and have 3+ years of industrial experience.  

    • Proven experience in chemical manufacturing environment with preference given to experience in thermoplastic polyolefins and/or polymeric material processing / extrusion. 

    • Proven experience in process optimization and management of complex technical projects using statistical-based design and analysis tools (e.g. Design of Experiments, Process Control Charts). 

    • Experience teaching fundamental science concepts to multiple audiences and/or mentoring. 

    • Experience with developing and providing rigorous and relevant inputs for financial analysis. 

    • Comfort working on a manufacturing floor daily, with manufacturing associates. 

    • Strong organizational, leadership, and follow-through skills 

    • Excellent communication skills: e.g. Clear ability to balance and recommend key priorities to management and other stakeholders in connection and harmony with broader corporate goals.

     

    IDEAL CANDIDATES HAVE THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS: 

    • Experience driving sensitivity analyses for product operational costs as a multifactorial function of process yields, raw material input, and direct and indirect labor variances. Experience using said findings to implement process improvement changes. 

    • Mentorship and team-building experience and/or prior experience building programs and effectively transferring duties to additional personnel. 

    • Experience and comfort with consulting and influencing multiple, key stakeholders in a flat organization. 

    • Demonstrated comfort, versatility, and persistence in a similarly fast-paced manufacturing environment. 

    • Demonstrated ability to apply a breadth of skills and perspectives to various situations.
