    PRESIDENT, HUMANE SOCIETY FOR SW WASHINGTON

     

    Salary: $130,000-$135,000/year

    Reports to:  Board of Directors

    This is a Full-Time position located in Clark County, Washington

      

    SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

    The President of the Humane Society for Southwest Washington is responsible for leading and providing oversight of nonprofit operations of the nonprofit including development, finance, human resources, marketing, community outreach, shelter and retail operations. The president reports directly to the Board of Directors. The president exemplifies the mission, vision, values and strategic direction of the organization, based on the goals and objectives of the strategic plan, the by-laws and the fiscal policies as approved by the Board. 

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    GOVERNANCE:  Cultivates an effective Board of Directors ensuring they exercise their full governance, vision and service potential on behalf of the organization. Works closely with the Board and Nominating Committee Chair to recruit and retain Board members and evaluate Board Members annually.  Supports operations and administration of the Board, interfaces between Board and staff and supports the Board’s evaluation of the president.

    HUMAN RESOURCES:  Ensures HSSW effectively recruits, retains, manages, trains and develops a high performing team (paid, volunteer and workforce partners), ensuring on-going leadership development with the HR director according to authorized personnel policies and procedures in conformance with relevant law, regulations and best practices. 

    FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT: Works with directors to develop annual department and organization budgets for Finance Committee and Board approval.  Develops financial and investment strategies as needed that align with investment policies and the mission. In coordination with the Finance Director, prudently manages organization resources using approved budget guidelines and according to applicable laws and regulations.  Also, supports the work with outside auditors to ensure continued compliance with acceptable business practices. Negotiates multi-year contracts with local municipalities for sheltering and property leases for ReTails locations.

    STRATEGIC PLANNING:  Working with the Board of Directors and senior HSSW staff, develops and implements an agreed upon strategic plan to maximize the impact of HSSW programs and operations in the community. Manages development of annual business plans. Tracks results and updates the plan regularly, reporting progress and challenges to the Board. 

    OVERALL OPERATIONS:  Provides leadership and oversight of Adoption Center/Shelter and ReTails Store(s) supervising seven direct reports:  Directors of Finance, Development, Shelter Operations, Retail Operations, Marketing, Shared Services and Human Resources. Leads the Directors’ and Leadership Teams. Keeps current on and updates new technologies spanning budget administration, donor records and other information systems to improve processes and efficiency and deliver superior animal welfare and healthcare services.

    Keeps current on best practices in use at other U.S. animal welfare and veterinary healthcare organizations and incorporate into shelter operations and policies where appropriate.  Provide the board and staff with a timely report of these enhancements and communicate these accomplishments to various stakeholders as appropriate.

    FUNDRAISING:  Actively engages in the cultivation and solicitation of philanthropic support through donations, sponsorships, planned giving, special requests, program needs and one-on-one meetings with current and potential donors. Works with Development Director, consultants and staff in planning and implementing development plans.  Works with Development Director, supporting the Capital Campaign Committee to raise $11 million dollars for the Leaps & Bounds fundraising effort.

    SHELTER OPERATIONS:  Works with appropriate directors and staff to ensure appropriate design, management, and delivery of quality programs, products, sales and services.  This currently includes: animal care, community programs, adoptions/admissions, education programs. Integral in the development and launch of the planned Urgent Care Center for the pets of low-income owners, the Behavioral Training & Education Center, and Call Resource Center.

    RETAIL OPERATIONS:  Works with appropriate directors and staff to ensure the ReTails Thrift Store continues to provide revenue for Shelter operations, connects with donors and customers both in the shop and at donation sites; provides additional engagement with the community through Cat Adoptions and other outreach services.  As a major earned-income revenue stream, the Retail Operation is closely engaged with the President, Finance and Marketing.

    MARKETING & COMMUNICATION:  Works with the Marketing Director to ensure appropriate brand management, advertising, promotions, public relations, social media, issues management and crisis communications, event production and internal communications. Serves as the public spokesperson for HSSW.

    SHARED SERVICES AND OUTREACH:  Cultivates partnerships and relationships in the region and nationally to expand the reach of HSSW programs and services with other nonprofits and businesses. Works with the Shared Services Director on the Humane Southwest Network (HSSW, Humane Society of Cowlitz County and West Columbia Gorge Humane Society.) A founding member of the ASAP Coalition (The Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland, shelters and other animal-related organizations in the Portland Vancouver Metro Region).  

    COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:  Engages in a wide range of community activities, serves on boards/councils, affiliates with professional organizations and animal welfare groups, networks, attends events – charity, government and civic functions – representing HSSW.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    ·      Demonstrated passion for the organization’s mission.

    ·      Entrepreneurial attitude, leadership and management skills experience.  Experience directing operations, managing staff, fundraising and providing financial oversight for a nonprofit or for-profit business.

    ·      Experience in managing and cultivating donors/donations, with particular focus on capital campaigns.

    ·      Demonstrated ability to negotiate contracts and manage projects, including overseeing the construction of the new building and remodel of the shelter.

    ·      Strong interpersonal skills.  Ability to lead multiple teams and work effectively with staff, volunteers, and donors, as well as community leaders, animal welfare advocates and organizations, the media, elected and government officials and other key stakeholders.

    ·      Strong Communicator.  Excellent listener and ability to communicate using multiple channels, keeping messages understandable for a wide range of stakeholders and abilities; experience making compelling presentations.

    ·      Proven ability to work collaboratively, provide constructive feedback, solve problems, inspire positive staff morale.  Commitment to personal and professional development of both staff and volunteers.

    ·      Exemplifies the highest level of personal and business ethics, honesty and transparency

    ·      A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience in relevant field preferred.

    ·      WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF STARTING, MUST BE A RESIDENT OF CLARK COUNTY, WASHINGTON.
