    MANDATORY COVID-19 GUIDELINE:

    As of March 15th, 2022, all onsite JSH employees must have received the necessary doses to complete the COVID-19 vaccine series (i.e., one dose of a single-dose vaccine or all doses of a multiple vaccine series) or have been granted a qualifying exemption, or are identified as having a temporary delay as recommended by the CDC. New hires also will be required to comply with this requirement before working onsite at any JSH facility.

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Responsible for promoting and maintaining quality patient care through effective management on his/her assigned unit or departments.  The Director of Med Surg provides leadership, coordinates activities and schedules as well as disseminates information on his/her designated unit/department. Participates in the evaluation of nursing care, in accordance with established philosophy. Promotes our Mission, Vision and Values while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

    FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Prolonged periods of standing and walking.

    Lifting, pushing, pulling up, transferring, repositioning patients.

    Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching for patient care functions.

    Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.

    Ability to successfully complete physical and agility test, all required health, and other screening tests.

     

    ORGANIZATIONAL EXPECTATIONS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    The Director of Med Surg is accountable for ensuring his/her assigned unit practices safe and reliable patient care.  The Director of Med Surg will ensure his/her unit is providing care in accordance to JSMC policy and procedure, CMS standards and regulations, and JC standards and regulations by:

    • Monthly chart audits on Quality/PI data
    • Monthly Environmental/Safety rounding
    • Attending and participating in Process and Performance improvement meetings
    • Ensuring staff education on policy/procedure, standards and regulations
    • Holding staff accountable to follow policy/procedure, standards and regulations

     

    The Director of Med Surg must embrace the Patient Excellence Philosophies and Principals by conducting him/herself in a professional manner and mentoring staff.  The Director of Med Surg ensures his/her staff are following Patient Excellence Philosophies and Principals by:

     

    • Monthly rounding on employees
    • Daily Leader rounding on patients
    • Validating employees on all initiatives
    • Implementing and following 90 day plans in LEAN

     

    The Director of Med Surg should maintain a positive working relationship with his/her staff as well as Physicians, LIP’s and ancillary departments as well as possess/demonstrate the following: 

    Provides a positive and professional representation of the organization.

    Promotes culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, reporting, documentation, and prevention.

    Maintains hospital standards for a clean and quiet patient environment to maintain a positive patient care experience.

    Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments in related scope of job role or practice.

    Adheres to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.

    Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities.

    Demonstrates excellent customer service through his/her attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization.

    Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and TJC standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies.

    NON-ESSENTIAL DEMANDS

    All other duties as assigned

    REPORTS TO:  ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT OF NURSING AND VICE PRESIDENT OF NURSING/CLINICAL SERVICES

    SUPERVISES:  Team Leader, RN’s, LPN’s, CNA, Desk Coordinators, Patient Safety Assistants

    SHIFT/WORK HOURS:  Monday-Friday 08:00-16:30, but may vary to meet needs of unit/department. On call 24/7 or designate on call person when not available.

    Required Experience

    MINIMUM EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited nursing program or respiratory therapy program

    MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE: Minimal 3-5 years’ experience in Nursing preferred with strong supervisory skills.  Proven strong clinical and communication skills

    EDUCATION:  Graduate from an accredited school of Nursing.  Bachelors of Science in Nursing or Master’s Degree preferred for Director of Med Surg but not required.

    REQUIRED LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION: Current RN license in the state of Kentucky

    Current BLS Certification – American Heart Association (Healthcare Provider) or American Red Cross (Healthcare Provider) required

    RN ACLS Certification preferred.
