    North Wind Services, is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customers mission.     Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

    Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly-motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.

    The Environmental Restoration Department (ERD) has an opening for a Drilling Geologist. The successful candidate will coordinate drilling of soil boreholes, installation of groundwater monitor and extraction wells, and well development, decommissioning, and sampling at our Livermore Site in Livermore, California, and Site 300 in Tracy, California.  The successful candidate will conduct soil, groundwater and soil vapor sampling, water level monitoring, and hydraulic/pneumatic testing of wells.

    This position may require the successful candidate have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    • Coordinate and direct environmental investigations using air/mud rotary, hollow-stem auger, direct-push, and sonic drilling and sampling techniques, rock-coring techniques, and borehole geophysical logging.

    • Perform lithological logging, soil, water and vapor sampling during drilling activities.

    • Consult with scientific personnel to determine well construction details and design; conduct installation, initial development, and surface completions of wells.

    • Conduct surface/subsurface soil, water and vapor sampling to support characterization activities.

    • Analyze and interpret complex geologic, and borehole geophysical data, prepare maps and cross-sections, compile and prepare logs, report findings, identify problems and recommend solutions.

    • Determine coordinates of drilling and sampling locations in the field with a handheld GPS unit.

    • Conduct final well development, complex baseline hydraulic tests, and baseline sampling of new wells; assist with pump installations.

    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

    • Bachelor of Science degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, or other relevant field with extensive related experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience.

    • Significant experience with site investigation/remediation projects and knowledge of various types of drilling techniques and equipment used.

    • Advanced technical experience and understanding of well development techniques; soil, groundwater, and soil vapor sampling methodologies, and strong understanding of contaminant chemistry.

    • Significant experience overseeing drilling and sampling operations, directing field personnel, and coordinating with multiple entities within an organization.

    • Experience interfacing with management, scientific, and engineering personnel in the interpretation of field data.

    • Experience identifying, developing, and recommending innovative solutions to complex environmental technical problems using decision making, field experience, and judgement.

    • Advanced verbal and written communication skills, necessary to effectively collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information; advanced technical report writing skills.

    • Ability to obtain and maintain a 40-hour HAZWOPER certificate.

    DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

    • California Professional Geologist certificate.

    • Experience on Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) projects.

    • Knowledge of DOE/LLNL's ES&H policies, and security requirements.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    PRE-PLACEMENT MEDICAL EXAM: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

    PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG TEST: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

    ANTICIPATED CLEARANCE LEVEL: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.
