    POSITION PURPOSE:

    The Mechanic I will service, repair, fuel, lube and maintain heavy equipment and light power train systems used for the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project, at the Moab or Crescent Junction site, including, but not limited to, heavy duty trucks and trailers, bulldozers, excavators, forklifts, water trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, trailers, light support vehicles, and maintenance on the shipping intermodal containers. The work is performed through the application of a body of knowledge to diagnose and repair heating and air conditioning systems. Welding experience is preferred but not required.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Diagnosing, servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing on various systems that are found on pieces of heavy equipment such as mechanical and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, generators, and pneumatic systems.
    • Performing equipment service maintenance requirements, including oil and hydraulic changes, according to manufacturers' recommendations.
    • Maintaining inventory of parts and support supplies to perform routine equipment maintenance.
    • Maintaining service records and preparing cost materials estimates.
    • Assisting with overhauling engines, replacing engines, and rebuilding components.
    • Keeping tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.
    • Road testing equipment.
    • Performing corrective and preventative maintenance on fleet of intermodal shipping containers.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and Experience:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent
    • 2–7 years of light power train systems and demonstrate the ability to use diagnostic equipment. Heavy equipment service, repair, and maintenance. Diesel mechanic certification preferred but not required.

    Skills and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the repair of heavy equipment.
    • Skilled in the use of diagnostic testing and tuning equipment, welding equipment, use of hand tools for repairs, and servicing of heavy equipment.
    • Trained to properly drain and dispose of refrigerant, vacuum systems, and charge systems to specific capacity.
    • Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions.
    • Ability to read manuals and schematics.
    • Ability to communicate professionally with other mechanics about repair work needed.
    • Motivated and willing to work as part of a team and perform multiple job functions.
    • Ability to read and comply with project direction contained in project-specific plans and procedures.

    Special Requirements:

    • Must have a valid driver's license.
    • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
    • Proof of citizenship will be required as a condition of employment.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Ability to qualify as a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Radiation Worker II and complete Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) worker qualification, and pass a HAZWOPER/respirator user medical exam.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Ability to work in different types of personal protective equipment (half-face, full-face respirators, Tyvek, etc.) while performing various tasks/activities (e.g., climbing, walking, stopping, etc.) in different work environments (e.g., cold, heat, etc.).
    • Physically able to perform job tasks, including lifting up to 50 lb alone.

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    Experience in work environments with exposure to all weather conditions and temperature extremes.
