    North Wind Services, is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customers mission.     Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

    Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly-motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.

    The Advanced Coating and Vacuum Process Lab (AC-VPL) within the Materials Engineering Division (MED) has an opening for a Mechanical Technician to support ongoing programmatic activities. The successful candidate will provide basic technical support while applying fundamental knowledge of fabrication, assembly, installation, and operation of system technologies utilizing common well understood methods. The successful candidate will interact with supervisor and coworkers and report daily to the supervisor or lead technician. Under supervisor or lead technician oversight, the successful candidate will provide technical support which may include but are not limited to: equipment set up and operation; general troubleshooting and maintenance; minor modification of basic hardware, software, and/or systems; data collection, rudimentary analysis, and reporting results.

    This position may require the successful candidate have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    -Provide basic technical support to engineering, scientific, and technical staff to plan and conduct experiments at LLNL. -Design, fabricate, assemble, and disassemble basic mechanical components and systems, using work control process and procedure requirements. -Operate experimental and diagnostic equipment and perform data recovery in the execution of experiments -Perform basic inspections and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods. -Apply basic knowledge of relevant technologies and processes, including interpreting and utilizing laboratory equipment to solve hardware or system malfunctions. -Maintain systems documentation and experimental records. -Perform facility related and technical functions such as maintenance, testing, and upgrades to equipment. -Follow and adhere to written, operational, and safety procedures, including practicing good housekeeping in experimental, work, and office areas and perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies. -Perform other duties as assigned.

    ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

    -An Associate's degree in mechanical, industrial, manufacturing, or electro-optic technology with no experience; (or) a technology related certificate or diploma with related work experience and related course work; (or) equivalent combination of education and experience in a technical or engineering field that includes mechanical training. -May be required to meet and maintain qualification criteria in a technical or engineering discipline necessary for programmatic operations, maintenance or ES&H requirements. -Ability to participate in general on-the-job training, such as operational or equipment training. -Familiarity with general laboratory and inspection equipment use such as balances, microscopes, scanners, and other support equipment. -Experience with personal computers and associated software (Microsoft Office Suite) for documenting experimental results. -Experience with basic experimental and testing processes. -Possess effective written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively. -Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.

    DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

    -Familiar with vacuum systems. -Experience operating machine tools (drill press, bandsaw, mill and lathe operation). -Familiar with 3D CAD mechanical design software. -Familiar with reading and interpreting mechanical drawings.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    PRE-PLACEMENT MEDICAL EXAM: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

    PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG TEST: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post offer, pre-employment drug test.

    ANTICIPATED CLEARANCE LEVEL: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
