NORTHEAST STEM STARTER ACADEMY at Mt. VERNON 2021 STEM SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM The NSSA seeks instructors/educators to support the delivery of the NSSA’s eighth year of our STEM Summer Camp for at-risk, underserved students, 3rd through 10th graders. Subjects include robotics, coding, physics, engineering, general and laboratory science, genomics, forensics, Raspberry Pi, 3D-Design, math, scientific & engineering research, and other STEM learning areas. The three weeks of our 2022 program will be Monday, July 18th through Friday, August 5th, from 9:15 to 3:00 daily. SITUATIONAL SUMMARY The NSSA seeks to engage instructors/educators to support the delivery of NSSA’s eighth year of our summer STEM learning camp program for at-risk, underserved students attending public schools in Mt. Vernon, NY, and students from the surrounding communities. The 2022 NSSA Summer STEM Camp Program will include eight groups of cohorts: 3rd through 10th graders. Early submission of application is recommended for enrollment is limited. The program starts on Monday, July 18th, and concludes on Friday, August 5th. All classes will be held at the Columbus School, 455 North High Street, Mount Vernon, NY 10552, 9:00 to 3:00 each day, including breakfast and lunch. The delivery of the program will be aligned with CDC guidance at the time of the program. . We seek subject matter experts /educators to conduct one or two 90-minute classes a day for the three weeks of the program. Subjects will include robotics, coding, physics, engineering, general and laboratory science, genomics, forensics, Raspberry Pi, 3D-Design/Printing, and other STEM-related learning. We also seek educators with Science & Engineering Research Fair teaching experience for 8th, 9th, and 10th graders. We will consider including alternative STEM-based subjects consistent with the specific expertise. Ideally, topics for instruction will be an area of STEM that the individual educator finds exciting and takes considerable pleasure in sharing with young learners. The program classes aim to create a fun but educationally rigorous, experiential learning climate that encourages and supports students seeking future STEM learning and self-study. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Create instructional activities for use in the classroom- project-based, hands-on learning • Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional lectures and a collection of related learning activities • Create a positive climate for students learning • Meet NSSA at Mt. Vernon’s program goals and objectives • Create in-class projects designed to enhance lectures and expand the student learning experience • Create a complete syllabus for the fifteen days of the program and provide it to NSSA leadership by Tuesday, July 1, 2022 • Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served. • Work with NSSA leadership to ensure learning goals are consistently being met during the delivery of the specific class • Establish and document clear objectives for all learning activities • Observe and evaluate students’ performance during the program and provide students with supportive insight and direction • Prepare and distribute brief individual reports for each student- intended to encourage students before the last day of the program, August 5, 2022. EDUCATOR COMPENSATION: Each instructor will receive compensation of $1650.00 per 3-week class, and up to $150.00 will be reimbursed for necessary and pre-approved subject-related class material.
