SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES: Medical Lab Technician performs complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic and other tests. Analyzes the chemical content of body fluids and test for levels in the urine and blood that show how a patient is responding to treatment using sophisticated laboratory equipment. Uses automated equipment and computerized instruments capable of performing a number of tests simultaneously. After testing and examining a specimen, they analyze the results and relay them to physicians. Must be skilled at working in a busy lab. Proficiency in maintaining the instruments and controlling supply levels in the laboratory is required for this position. Competence in compiling and storing accurate proficiency test records with discretion is necessary. Strong communication talent needed to effectively communicate with the staff, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals. Being productive working independently or as part of a goal-oriented team is required to being successful.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Working independently, this Lab Tech follows prescribed and generally stringent policies and procedures in testing samples.
The Lab Tech brings together knowledge and experience with safety and lab procedures to ensure that the lab operates smoothly.
The Lab Tech helps in resolving challenges encountered with samples or equipment operation, contacting the appropriate resources in order to get issues resolved in a timely manner.
The Lab Tech regularly interacts with physicians, nurse practitioners and medical support personnel regarding sample testing and results.
The Lab Tech is responsible for communicating the need for lab supplies or prepare an ordering list for the inventory control specialist to order.
This Lab Tech will maintain productivity by monitoring the workload of the lab’s functional areas while identifying peak and slack periods and communicating any issues with the Director of Clinical Services.
The Lab Tech will be required to assist as needed in sterile venipuncture for the collection of blood samples alongside the Phlebotomist.
Exercises independent judgment; prepare reports and related documents; and maintains working relationships with Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and other staff.
Completes all other responsibilities as assigned by management.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Associates Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or as described by CMS (CLIA) required
Experience in a clinical laboratory (e.g. linearity’s, establishing control ranges, etc.) is highly preferred. Experience working in the hematology, serology, and chemistry departments of a clinical laboratory is preferred.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The specific work environment for this position is a multiple doctors’ facility working in an office setting. This position involves considerable standing and working on instruments having sole responsibility for his or her working environment and it involves working independently within a larger setting. Typically, all required responsibilities are completed while standing in the lab or work station although walking to other areas within the office can be necessary. The environment may be stressful at times due to testing timelines, job requirements and other factors.
The position requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions and finger use. Pushing and pulling are occasionally required. Use of a computer, keyboard and telephone along with various lab equipment or machines is an essential part of the job.
