SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS:
The Safety Specialist is responsible for leading the company’s Hour-of-Service (HOS) safety compliance programs, processes, training, operations, audits, advocating and fostering the Company’s “Safety Culture” of Personal Responsibility for Safety.
SAFETY SPECIALIST ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The main functions and priorities of the Safety Specialist is to work closely with Nova Lines drivers on a daily basis to ensure Hours-of-Service (HOS) compliance standards are being met, while developing and cultivating a positive driver experience as they become familiar with Nova Lines processes, procedures and policies as it pertains to the driver.
- Daily monitoring of Logs with HOS Violations, Logs with Form & Manner Errors and Unidentified Driving Events
- Counseling drivers on proper HOS compliance when violations occur
- Documenting any and all counseling sessions with drivers, to ensure their progress is being tracked and evaluated
- Report to management daily when exceptions or multiple violations occur
- Build a relationship with all existing and new drivers, so they know that you are the main contact for any HOS question, concern or issue
- Work with key Operation team members, including them on any HOS they may need to be aware of with a particular driver
- During new driver orientation, be able to train a driver class size anywhere from 1-8 drivers on proper ELD and HOS compliance
- Be the expert with the current ELD system in use (KeepTruckin), leading the Safety Department in this category
- Navigate through any equipment failure with our drivers and the ELD team to resolve quickly and within compliance
- Maintain and manage regulatory records as required by the DOT
- Enforcement of current Nova Lines policies and procedures relating to HOS Compliance
- Assist the Safety Department with additional Ad Hoc assignments
- Ability to take on additional projects assigned by the Safety and Risk Manager
LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
- Ideal candidate will possess a “can do” attitude with a “will do” work ethic
- Demonstrate excellent negotiation skills to deal effectively with individuals and groups within and outside the organization
- Must have the ability to work in a fast paced environment
- Must be able to read, write and speak English fluently.
- Ability to communicate and interact effectively with people from multi-functional and diverse backgrounds.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
- Must be PC literate.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet, web-based and job related specific software applications such as McLeod and Keep Truckin ELD's

- Strong verbal and written communication skills

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in business, safety or transportation field preferred
- 4 - 6 years previous experience in transportation or trucking industries
