  • Responsibilities

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    Under the supervision of the Fitness Director/Coordinator, the Fitness Coach will provide supervision and instruction to members by listening actively, strengthening relationships, and promoting healthy living with Y members. The Coach is responsible for assisting in membership development and retention through quality leadership and continuous follow through with member engagement.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

    1. Embody an outgoing and enthusiastic personality at all times.
    2. Greet all members in a professional and friendly manner, using their names whenever possible, and offering to assist them with their work out needs.
    3. Circulating the fitness center to actively and purposefully interact/engage with members when not in one-on-one appointments.
    4. Must understand basic components of a safe and effective exercise program.
    5. Conduct FitQuest appointments for new members in order to educate on exercise principles and establish good workout habits.
    6. Coach and encourage members to meet their own determined wellness goals and to continue with their program.
    7. Assess an individual’s progress and make appropriate changes.
    8. Embody sensitivity and patience in dealing with the inactive population of which could be intimidated by exercise and workout areas.
    9. Supervise member workouts when circulating the fitness center and providing constructive yet positive feedback for maximum fitness gains.
    10. Listen to questions and needs of Y members and take ownership in responding back appropriately.
    11. Identify unsafe or hazardous exercises and suggest alternate exercises to assist the member on the spot.
    12. Maintain the Fitness Center for cleanliness and monitor all equipment for possible hazardous conditions. Report any damaged or broken equipment to the appropriate person(s).
    13. Enforce all posted guidelines and policies in the fitness center.
    14. Follow all YMCA policies and procedures.

    ACCOUNTABILITY:

    Accountable for completion of assigned goals as measured by the number of people served, cause driven measures, service satisfaction scores, operating results, and supervisor evaluation of assigned duties. 

    An offer of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet minimum requirements of the position. The requirements may include background check, drug test, driver’s license record, CPS, and/or criminal background check. 

    Additional drivers license check, CPS, criminal background check, alcohol, and/or drug testing may be required to be processed in the future in order to meet and/or maintain the requirements of this position.

    ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

    • Physically able to successfully complete required job functions, including use of hands, arms, fingers, able to talk and hear, use a computer, sit and stand, regularly move/lift up to 50 pounds, enter all YMCA environments (office spaces, indoor and outdoor maintenance/mechanical areas, fitness areas, pool and pool space, camping areas, unimproved outdoor locations and other program areas).
    • Maintenance and housekeeping of fitness and cardio equipment. Bending, lifting, spotting weightlifters, moving, standing up to and including entire shift, ability to get to floor and back up, and able to lift a minimum of 45 lbs.

    Required Skills

    EDUCATION:

    Bachelor’s degree in fitness related fields are preferred. College courses related to anatomy and physiology or related experience is accepted. A high school diploma or GED is required.

    CERTIFICATIONS:

    • Nationally recognized accredited certifications are accepted, I.e. ACE, NASM, NSCA, ACSM.
    • Must obtain and maintain First Aid, CPR/AED, and Emergency Oxygen certifications within 60 days of hire.
    • Upon hire YMCA certifications to include: Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y AND Listen First within 10 days of hire; Healthy Lifestyles & Principles AND YMCA Foundations of Strength and Conditioning within 30 days of hire.
    • Must complete additional Y required trainings as assigned including Child Abuse Prevention, Blood Borne Pathogen, etc.

     

    Required Experience

    FITNESS COACH I: has less than 2 years of experience OR education in the Health and Wellness field.

    FITNESS COACH II: has 2-4 years of experience OR education in the Health and Wellness field OR nationally recognized certification.

    FITNESS COACH III: has 5+ years of experience AND education in the Health and Wellness field OR nationally recognized certification.

    FITNESS COACH IV: Meets Fitness Coach III requirements, but will be full time employee with additional responsibilities as assigned to assist Fitness Director.
